Why does the US feel they need to tell everybody what to do? Why do we feel we have to be the world's conscience and the world's policeman? The US has neglected Africa for centuries and now all of a sudden we want to impose sanctions. They must've discovered oil in Zimbabwe. Invade 'em, bomb 'em Georgie, do what you do best.

No. Zimbabwe is a mess but the US should mind it's own business. By what right do we (The US) have to tell anyone what is best for them?
Better to mind our own business and let the citizens of whatever nation sort how they will, or will not do and what kind of government they want. Zimbabweans need to do for themselves without outside interference.

No, I believe everything is wrong with Zimbabwe. My point is, there's a whole planet out there. Let the rest of the world decide if sanctions are merited. What kind of moral imperative do we have to dictate, or even suggest, to anybody what they should do considering how currently successful we are at nation building and instilling democracy? I'm cynical enough about this present administration that when I hear a vaporous pronouncement like that coming from them it's just Bush buzz noise intended to garner a few minority votes. Humanity is not in their repertoire.
As for sanctions...shall we withhold food, medical supplies, call them bad names? All sanctions have ever accomplished is to hurt the poor and disenfranchised. Does anyone really think Mugabe cares what the world thinks? He won't be going hungry.

"The US has neglected Africa for centuries and now all of a sudden we want to impose sanctions."
We have? You must not have been paying attention to the hero's welcome Bush got on his last trip to African nations. The Bush administration has done more than any other to fight AIDs in Africa.
As for the U.S. and the U.N., many of us would be more than happy to remove the U.S. from the U.N. and kick the U.N. right out of the U.S. -- and stop funding it far more than any other nation.

"The Bush administration has done more than any other to fight AIDs in Africa. "
This is, quite simply, a lie. The only anti-AIDS money going to Africa from Bush's administration is tied to a requirement that those accepting the money teach only an 'abstinence only' approach which has been proven by numerous independent studies to have increased the incidence of AIDS.
What the Bush administration HAS done (among many other crimes) is managed to reverse a victory against the spread of AIDS and turn it into a mockery of human life.

If you consider a bunch of costumed performers dancing around little Georgie any more than a photo op believe what you will. And... the US (Bush) has promised more than any nation (talk is cheap) but how much has been actually spent? 50 billion, not in my lifetime! And...when they can't talk about birth control as part of the program, how effective is it? And...how much does the US owe in dues right now to the UN? More than any other nation. Check it out, consRstupid.

Why do we feel that the US should be the world's policeman? Because no one else will step up and take the job.

We need to be careful about dropping sanctions from our recipe of foreign policy. By doing so, we are limiting our ability to negotiate, and engage in talks with these countries. Like it or not, no matter who is in power, the UN will look to us to lead. After 8 years of unilateralism, I would think you be excited to hear that Obama wants to engage in using sanctions more pre-emptively to push his foreign policy pronouncements.
This is exactly the kind of policy Obama will persue.

for those that believe that it is wrong for the US to push others around by placing sanctions on a country that is run by a socialist leader that the left in this country cheered for when he came to power. Then so have your way. While the US is at it, we can cut off all foreign aid to all the other countries of the world from our government. Would you like that all of you that believe that we should not sanctiona country that when its socialist leader came to power was a food exporter and is now a food begger?

Remember Zimbabwe
.
.
.
Remember Zimbabwe in your prayers tonight
Remember the children who will die
Remember before you lay down your head
To say a prayer for the mornings dead
When Lord Hunger claims the African night
.
.
As the Eagle rises (oh what a sight!)
To make mockery of a desperate plight
A faint voice was heard to have said
____________________"Remember Zimbabwe..."
.
.
As we prepare to express our might
And do what it is we believe is right
Let us remember that child in her bed
For the oil in her veins bleeds all too red
And there is desperation in her eyes
