The Supreme Court's landmark ruling on gun ownership last week focused on citizens' ability to defend themselves from intruders in their homes. But research shows that surprisingly often, gun owners use the weapons on themselves.

"Suicides accounted for 55 percent of the nation's nearly 31,000 firearm deaths in 2005, the most recent year for which statistics are available from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention".

The above statement certianly got my attention.

"The above statement certianly got my attention."

There are 250 million privately owned guns in America, the fact that guns are used in suicide is not surprising.

Went and looked it (cheating again) the problem is suicide.

Every 16 min someone in America committed suicide, that's 7/24/365

      Suicide attempts

810,975 attempts translates to one attempt every 39 seconds.

If fact by the time you read this, well you can do the math.

I wonder if the other 45% of the deaths by guns are from the person shooting their spouse? :)

Well, not necessarily their spouse, but the article says:

"homicides accounted for 40 percent of gun deaths."

And then I always thought nothing ever good comes from owning a gun. I never begrudge anybody wanting to take their own lives.

Even your own children or your spouse? Great attitude. Never is such a permanent word.

If it isn't guns. It would've been another method of suicide, guns not at fault here.

              The article also says:

"Studies have also shown that homes in which a suicide occurred were three to five times more likely to have a gun present than households that did not experience a suicide, even after accounting for other risk factors."

I realize that this is a correlation and not a causal relationship. Perhaps some other factors cause both gun ownership and suicides. Perhaps gun owners are more unstable to start with, or perhaps many people get gun because they are already contemplating suicide, but three to five times as likely is a big difference.

You should be so lucky that you weren't so despondent to the point that you never had to do the same to yourself.

            FTA:

Vernick said the Supreme Court decision underscores the need for further study into what will happen to suicide and homicide rates in the district when the handgun ban is lifted.

Today, the CDC budgets less than $900,000 for firearm-related projects, and most of it is spent to track statistics. The agency no longer funds gun-related policy analysis.

The anti-gun crowd Have been trying to make owning a gun a "medical condition" for years. Obama said as much when he said some people feeling depressed and powerless to stop the changes effecting their lives grow bitter and turn to guns!! See a "mential condition". Some doctors have taken to asking their patients whether or not a handgun may be found in their home. They ask children, and adults! Treating it like it is a medical concern!!

The government has no business spending tax dollars to investigate whether a Constitutionally recognized "RIGHT" of the citizens is a mental condition!!! Con't.

            Con't.

What they might investigate is why liberals oppose guns in the first place. If approached properly they would find the liberal anti-gun crowd are actually laboring under a true mental condition!! It seems liberals do have a mental condition. They condemn executing a convicted mass murderer but support taking the life of an unborn baby during the last weeks of its life. They support the notion a person can do whatever they wish with their bodies (take drugs, etc.) yet will demand a crack mother be sentenced to prison when she gives birth to a crack baby!! Perhaps the mother was merely trying to save the medical bill and self-abort but failed in the attempt!! This line of thinking and reasoning indicates a lack of moral reasoning or a mental condition!!

There was nothing unique about that year รข;; gun-related suicides have outnumbered firearm homicides and accidents for 20 of the last 25 years. In 2005, homicides accounted for 40 percent of gun deaths. Accidents accounted for 3 percent. The remaining 2 percent included legal killings, such as when police do the shooting, and cases that involve undetermined intent.

For those who distrust statistics it should nevertheless be self-evident that many acts of violence to self and others occur in the heat of the moment.

              Adrenaline over-rides logic.

What could be more dangerous in these situations than a loaded gun being accessible?

The article does not detail deaths by shooting of family members - either purposely or by accident [including mistaken identity] nor of surprise, unexpected but legitimate visitors.

Finally there is the influence of cultural norms as expressed, for example in the phrase: "Shoot first, ask questions later".

An interesting study also would interview people who have shot someone under ANY circumstances and their feelings about that afterwards - which of course may be strongly by the circumstances and the consequences.

I suppose that its asking too much of the armchair warriors of propeller to describe the actual times that they have shot someone and the short and long-term effects of this experience?

Let the gun owners kill themselves off. Maybe after enough of them are gone, we can stop having to have guns altogether.

That's about as dumb as logic as one can get. What's your problem with legal gun owners?
