        From what I've been hearing from our military leaders, they still think the situation is pretty precarious. Outside al-Queda are only a small part of the problem we face, and there has still been no forward progress in settling the political problems between different factions.

        To top everything else off, we are now supporting the Sunnis again which will push al-Maliki closer than ever to Iran.

            "The Saudis also support the Sunni"??? Jane you ignorant liberal they are Sunni. Sunni and Shia are religious orders similar to the Roman Catholics and Orthodox Catholics. The only difference, you don't find many Catholics hoping for a bunch of virgins and trying to blow each other up.

            The entire Saudi nation is Sunni as is their king. AlQueda has been fighting with many nations including Saudi Arabia. They support the downfall of the King in the hope of creating another "successful" theocracy like they have in Iran, but controlled by the Sunni clerics.

            While the Saudis are corrupt, they're certainly better than what Iraq had under Saddam and what Iran currently has. A friendly tin-plated monarchy is better than an openly hostile enemy. That's why Bush supports them.

              I happen to know that the Saudis are Sunni, just as I know that the Iranians are Shia.

              We should not be supporting any "faction". They are BOTH religious factions. We did not go into Iraq to pick a religion to support. We were SUPPOSED to be going in there to get rid of Saddam and his regime.

              However, by doing that we UNLEASHED the sectarian violence which is mainly BETWEEN the Sunni and the Shia.

              Even Bush's millionth excuse for invading - to "bring democracy" - will NEVER work when ANY religious faction is supported by the U.S.

              I am sure that Iraq WILL have a RELIGIOUS regime, regardless of whether it is Sunni or Shia. In EITHER case, the PEOPLE loose because no religious regime is a "democracy".

              Those two factions will fight until the end of time.

              But, Bush gave them a whole new playing field when he removed Saddam and let his army disappear and thus removed all control and containment of sectarian violence in that country.

Obviously the distinction was in the fact that Sunni Iraqi's are from a different country than the Sunni Saudi's, and the Saudi's have NO FREAKING BUSINESS 'supporting' them with our military in the middle. I don't give a good GD that Saudi's are Sunni. They have NO business supplying Iraqi Sunni's with ANY help in Iraq's little tiff between religious factions.

              But as YOU appear to see their support as no big deal, certainly you have the same 'understanding' (flawed though it may be) for Iran who is SHIA to be helping Iraqi Shiites. Right?

              Bush supports whoever is profitable to his Administration. That's why Bush invaded a country that wasn't a threat to America. For profit - spell that Oil. Over a million Iraqis have died so the Neo-Cons could rake their profit, over 4100 American soldiers have died to pad the pocketbooks of the War Industry.

              There were no WMD, Saddam offered to go into exile before the War, and if you think the Iraqis are going to have a Democracy, look at whether the U S is trying to get a puppet power installed before the UN Mandate runs out in a couple of months.

              This war was started and continued to profit the War Industry and for the same reason, the rhetoric has started against Iran. They have a lot of Oil also.

              Look at the deal the U S is trying to impose on Iraq. It looks like a Dictatorship to me.

                    As your OWN REPUBLICAN Senate proved in 2005 and 2006, and your own REPUBLICAN-controlled Pentagon has proved in TWO reports (one published this year), the Bush administration LIED about ALL of the reasons to invade Iraq.

                      Hi bubba: one thing i noticed about FSU is he still lives in the clint era, 16 years ago; any and every issue of todays problems are answered by what happened 16 years ago.

                      So rather than face todays problems and come up with an answer, his responses are basically from his grad year (92) and since he no longer has a teacher to tell him what to think, he is stuck on his own.....sad isn't it.

        Assuming you dont mind dodging bombs, having guns pointed at you at every street corner, sporadic electricity, roadblocks on the roads that are operable, mass unemployment, haven for terrorists, walking to get fresh water, 141st in life expectancy (67yrs) .....why, its a virtual paradise.

          You have no friends in the military. Just took a friend's son to lunch today. He's shipping out in August for his 2nd visit to Iraq. While he's not fond of going back, he agrees with the progress.

          On you other claims, I just finished the commissioning of a major power station in Iraq last month. I think before you guys brag how great it was you ask around. First Baghdad has never had proper sewers, ever. We're building them now and running water through out the city. Saddam never had that. As to power, it is spotty at times. But the average "normal" people never had it before. It's only Saddam's people who had the power, water and phones. Everyone else got the left overs. Speaking of food, Iraq has always been a self sufficient nation when it came to food. As dry as it gets, the basics are in good supply. The problem Saddam like the toys and use the oil money for them. Palaces, weapons and the like.

          A free Iraq will always be better then a Saddam Iraq.

            We bombed the place to a shambles, left the borders wide open for infiltration, and had no real strategy as to how to proceed after the pathetic Republican guard (I love that)threw down their guns, stripped off their uniforms and blended into the scenery.

            WOOOOHOOOO!!! We build a colossal embassy where nothing stood before!!! PROGRESS!

            Something about that place must make people gravitate to palaces, huh, BB?

            Get electricity & water to the masses after the billions are spent by Haliburton & KBR.

            BTW-my brother, a WestPoint grad, is in Iraq. I'm very proud of his service, but he is not misguided by the rhetoric of this war, but that is irrelevant.

            We'll ALL die waiting for a 'free' Iraq that will never come.

            --But before we got there Iraq had also never had hundreds of thousands of their people slaughtered by a foreign invader that claimed to be there to "save" them. Iraq never had three million refugees forced to flee their homes while dodging daisy cutter bombs until we came to rescue them either. Let's see... If I had to choose between sweating for lack of AC or having my flesh melted off my bones by incendiary bombs...Which would I choose? Hmmm...That's a toughie. ;-x

              Again you're incorrect on your assessment...More liberal blathering from the man who doesn't know math very well...If you look more closely, which I know you haven't because you love to blame America and our military for civilian casulties...You will find that the majority of these violent, civilian deaths were caused by the insurgents and the terrorist themselves not by our troops, plus if Suddam had still been in power many more innocent people would have been included in the death toll increasing it even more...But that will never happen because Saddam is officially worm food...

        Women's rights are now GONE. Women are being kidnapped and murdered for not wearing a veil.

        The mortality rate for children under 5 is the HIGHEST in the history of the country.

        Clean water is also a rare commodity.

        Over 4 million Iraqis are displaced refugees and they still have little hope of being helped or being able to return to their homes.

          "Woman's right?" What are you talking about? Woman couldn't drive, couldn't vote and free speech, no one dared to exercise. Saddam and his son's ran a little operation that women feared. If you were cute and say 12 yrs old or older, your presence might be required at one of the palaces. If the girl attended she would be raped by Uday and eventually returned. If you protested, the girl would still be raped but the family would disappear and property would be taken by the state. Great rights....

          On the mortality rate for children, 4.5% is high but certainly much lower then most African and many other Asian nations. On the displacement, I've actually seen reports of 5,000,000 but in most cases even though the violence has ended they want to go to the USA. Go figure, the big evil USA is where they'd like to go.

          As to deaths, there were over 16,000 people murdered last year. Sounds bad until you realize that was in the USA in 2007, it's even worse.

            When Saddam was in power, women had jobs - you know, CAREERS - and they wore 'regular' cloths - no veils, etc. were required.

            What Saddam and his boys did to SOME women does NOT take away from the OVERALL facts that women had more freedom and more opportunities to be independent and self-sufficient.

            Comparing the mortality rate of children in Iraq to other countries is NOT the point.

            The point IS that before we invaded Iraq the death rate of children was MUCH lower than it has been SINCE we invaded. Many of those baby and child deaths are from disease due to lack of clean water and sanitation and the LACK of medical care and medical supplies to treat bacterial infections and other diseases and ailments.

            Many babies and children are also being born with deformities or are suffering deformities due to contamination from U.S. weapons. Americans SHOULD be VERY concerned about that fallout from our 'invasion' and occupation, especially the pro-lifers.

  I feel for these American soldier's families. The Americans do not belong there. They are an occupying force on a trumped up war. There were no WMD and no Al Qaeda link to Saddam. 9/11 was an inside job!!! It has been about oil from the get go. My only wish is that the Bushes & the Cheneys of the world could feel the pain of all the Iraqis who have died and or are refugees. How many have come to America? Less than a thousand.

          Technically, they are not your words and how is the quote she used out of context? The only word that is common is "truth".

          Now, if you want to state that you believe the idea of 9/11 being an inside job is nutty, that's fine and I would agree with you. Stating your words have been taken out of context is incorrect, but unfortunately this is a typical argument defense that is not nearly challenged enough.

            Uhhhh reading comprehension 101 here McFly.

            rightfromwrong claimed 9/11 was an inside job as I quoted in my reply. Note the quotations around "truth" and then note the word after it-movement-in my reply.

            If you follow the discussion it is clear that by "truth" movement I was referring to the nutjob "9/11 was an inside job" "truth" movement, not the truth in general.

            A simple google of truth movement, (note the first website is a 9/11 nutjob site 911truth.org):

            So if you actually follow the discussion it is rather clear candida did infact completely take my words out of context when he said "Oh, yes, truth is a dangerous thing." because the truth I was referring to was the "truth" movement not truth in general.

              Intention of yours or Candida's words have nothing to do with context. It has to do with interpretation.

              The other thing is where are your words? Again, the only word in common is *truth*.

              So, your *words* were not taken anywhere, let alone out of context.

              You want to talk about Candida changing the tone of your intention, that is another matter. Of course, the ambiguity of Candida's reply would need to come into play. Her comment could be interpreted as a specific response or a general one.

              I guess I don't understand the tone of your comment to begin with here. It has nothing to do with comprehension, it has to do with your claim that your words were used outside of the context presented. Not your words, therefore, not your context.

    Return Iraq to Sunni (in this case Wahhabist) rule? Don't think the Shia would appreciate this and would likely touch off a regional conflict based on religion.

    The dirtiest secret we currently hide in Iraq is the forced separation of these communities often by literal walls. That is the #1 reason for the reduction in violence in Iraq, not the surge. And this resolves little, only heats up the powder in the keg.
