In light of the Republican attacks on Sen. Obama, when he stated that he would "talk" to the leaders of Iran, this is indeed astonishing.

Well, maybe Bush is learning what to do, even tho it is the twilight of his presidency...I want to say better late than never, but I dunno...

This sure sounds a lot like what those on the right side of the isle would call Appeasement... Personally, i think it's a good thing, and it is something Obama would have no doubt done come 2009.

I really don't think so. Mr. Obama made it clear he intended to visit with Iran's leaders directly. This type of office wouldn't contain an ambassador or any officials. This would merely be a more direct contact with the US and Iran. I suspect the French and Swiss are tired of being our go betweens. That plus anytime you do either a favor, you owe them.

Actually, I think it has occured as a practical matter due to the inadequacy of communications through third parties.

Starting with low level discussions is the best way to go, and I'm sure before Obama is elected he'll have some talks with his people to start the process.

It'll be interesting to see if this happens and, if so, how it turns out.
If you read the story, Oscar, you will see it is akin to the U.S. diplomatic outpost in Cuba and more of a tool to communicate with those opposed to the current leadership in Iran.
"Like the one in communist Cuba, an interest section, or de facto embassy, in the Iranian capital would give the United States a presence on the ground through which it can communicate directly with students, dissidents and others without endorsing the government..."

What it comes down to is that if Obama had suggested this route, you'd be screaming about how he's a traitor and it can only lead to Iran killing every single man, woman and child in America. As it is, though, you'll backpedal to France to explain how when it comes to the Repugnant Cons doing this, it's a fantastic idea.

You sure have some extremely unfounded assumptions there, Dio. You know what they say about assumptions, right? Only, I'd say more U than Me ;)
You might try rooting your comments in reality next time.

No, that would be when Obama recognizes Cuba in tandem with copying its medical system and limits on freedom of speech.

I think if Mr. Churchill was in office, we'd see Great Britain still being a great power with an army, navy and air force. I don't think he's sit around talking with Iran. He would have already taken their ports and sunk their ships with the army in Tehran within the week. Oh, the Britain of old.

I like it. It's a way of showing the younger generations just what the U.S. is about instead of letting radical, gray-bearded clerics and state-run Iranian media dictate viewpoints and opinions while simultaneously thumbing our noses Iran's president.
It also might lessen the odds of a nuclear strike.

It could also end up with more dead Marines. Having said that, I will now wait to see how long it takes before liberals start saying that Bush wants dead Marines so we can go to war with Iran before he leaves office.
(figured I'd ruin it for them by saying it first)
I will say that this does have its ups and downs. The jury is still out.

Attacking Iran is "a cowboy thing". Talking with one's adversaries is not the same thing as appeasement. The test is in the rationale and results. Think of it this way; if we can reduce the perceived mandate Ahmadinajad has with Iranians, then we can ratchet down tensions in the area. If we attack Iran then we totally legitimize Ahmadinajad and lose a great opportunity to see Iran ease up - I almost said liberalize - but I don't want you to go into convulsions :)
Many people in Iran are not in favor of their government. This may help them out. The young people there don't hate us as much as some in the US believe.

I don't believe it...this is our President talking here...making a good, albeit, late, attempt to communicate with at least some people within Iran. Maybe not the heads of government, but at least it's a good start.
Think of it this way: when you have an argument with your significant other, you both get angry, maybe not talk much for a day or two. Now...do you never talk to him/her again, or do you try to break the ice for the good of the relationship?
OK...now...think global...

Keep in mind that Iran is a very religious Islamic country. They have Sharia law there. The Quran tells Muslims to attack non Muslims until they avow Islam. This is a basic root of Islam.

I am talking about the Quran, Hadith, and the example of Muhammad. The following is called the "Sword Verse". The "(of war)" is added by translators to make it seem to be during a war.
Surah 9:5 But when the forbidden months are past then fight and slay the pagans wherever ye find them and seize them beleaguer them and lie in wait for them in every stratagem (of war); but if they repent and establish regular prayers and practice regular charity then open the way for them: for Allah is Oft-Forgiving Most Merciful

That is an absolute truth.
Iranian youth are very Western in their desires.
They want a piece of that economic pie and will only get it through education - not through memorizing the Q'ran.
The youth in most of the ME are tired of war and living in fear. Only the most radical fundamentalists (a small percentage - think Fred Phelps in the US) hate the West.
