This goes beyond hyping religious beliefs, I'm sure even the most devout creationist would agree. This man has severe mental problems.

OK, teaching Bible studies in a science class makes about as much sense as teaching chemistry in Sunday School... allowing that to be brushed off as pure stupidity on the teacher's part, where the hell does he get off assaulting children? I wonder how he'd feel about someone grabbing one of his own kids and putting cigars out on their face?

It's time that those of us capable of rational thought took our countries and institutions back from the obviously delusional. Anyone who thinks that the definitive operating manual for life was written buy a bunch of ignorant goat herders two thousand years ago is obviously a few bricks shy of a full load.
We give these people far more respect than they deserve.

Yeah, I think that even holds up in parochial schools too--if I was paying exhorbitant prices for my kid to go to a private religious school, I'd be wondering why he isn't learning what he's supposed to be learning. Imagine sending your kid to a math tutor, where he's then taught French, but no math whatsoever. Excuse me, this is band class, why are we doing chemistry experiments? Any parent in their right mind would never put up with that kind of curriculum, what makes anyone think that they should put up with this? Save it for religious studies.
People seem to think because it's religion, then it's suitable for any class, when it's completely off topic. If you want to teach religion, get a job doing it, don't modify your job to suit your agenda.
And don't brand my kid.

Probably because they knew the superintendant wouldn't call the teacher to task. That would take courage, and if the teacher passed the local litmus tests he'd get away with it. The police would back up the teacher, for similar reasons.
In our school system we have a history teacher who starts off talking about anything before 4000 BC with the statement, "Of course I don't believe this, but they say I have to teach it."

Huh? You mean to tell me if a parent took a child to the police station with a cross burned into his arm, & filed an assault complaint, the police wouldn't act? That makes no sense. Of course they'd act.

Yes, it was reported to both school officials and the police. The story was floating around here some time ago about it. The lawsuit is a more recent development.
The real issue is some people are stuck in ancient myths and others have seen through it, and it's a constant war back and forth as we attempt to grapple with the cognitive dissonance involved, especially for those heavily indoctrinated who experience terror at the idea of relinquishing their worldview.

My guess would be that the school didn't call the cops because then THEIR abilities would be called into question... things like, what kind of background checks do you run on your teachers? How many felons and child molestors/abusers do you have working here?
They most likely hoped it would simply just go away--keep in mind, this crap probably happens a lot more than any of us think it does, it just never makes it out of the community.

And his FRIEND even came to his defense? He's all "He's a good teacher...other than the cross-burning thing" maybe I'm taking that out of context and it's a legitimate thing to say. But that won't stand up in court it's like saying "You know, other than the molestation, he's a nice guy" "other than the quadruple homocide, he's a kitten"

#1 why did the school board even need to vote on this?
#2 the article says-Freshwater used a science tool known as a high-frequency generator to burn images of a cross on students' arms in December.
studentS armS? you mean there was more then 1???
And #3 I would probably consider suing the school district because they stated they have had complaints against this so called teacher for 11yrs that someone knows of, they tried to find another place for him but couldn't find one. How about out the fricken door????
If that was my kid, I don't care if the burn lasted 10 minutes, I'd be LIVID!
That's assault!
Usually I'm not gung ho on lawsuits, but in this case, bet your life!
