"The location for today's attack was deliberately chosen to remove any notion that off-shore oil exploration is far from our reach," the group said in a subsequent statement. "The oil companies and their collaborators do not have any place to hide in conducting their nefarious activities."

((And here we go again jacking up the prices.))

IMHO this is in reaction to the Saudi announcement that they will "look into" the inflated price of oil. Keep those prices up there. Odd coincidence though.... this oil rig produces the exact amount of oil the Saudi's were to increase production by. Things that make you go "Hmmmmmm.........."

No, this attack has to do with sovereignty that native peoples have over their own natural resources. You gotta remember foreign companies are in their land sucking their resources dry and they still live in a state of abject poverty.

It's about them looking through barb wire fences at air conditioning, refrigerators and electric like while they die of malaria and dysentery.

If capitalism did a better job of spreading the wealth you would not see these attacks.

The inequity between the haves and have nots of Nigeria is what's driving the militants to target the oil companies.

Please. Without the oil industry, Nigeria wouldn't even have the "haves". It would be just another impoverished, strife-torn, backwater stinkhole ranked amongst the world's poorest economies, like the rest of Africa.

Couple of modern armed & crewed gunboats (with radar) should be capable of sorting this little issue out.

Not that I completely disagree with the "militant group", as their Govt has done sod all for their population apart from teach them the benefits of corruption........

"WOW I wonder if Bush will think of invading Nigeria now swi9nce they have ample oil reserves also."

Quite possible. Since the Democrats and the Enviro-Nazis won't allow our oil companies to drill on our own soil (Gulf of Mexico, off-shore California, Colorado oil shale deposits, ANWR in Alaska), we may have to start dealing with Nigeria, too.

I find it funny how the U.S. gets only a tiny fraction (about 20%) of its oil from the Middle East, yet Libs keep insisting that Bush invaded Iraq because of their oil reserves. I also find it funny that France, Germany and most of the rest of Europe gets almost ALL of their oil from the Middle East, yet won't lift a finger to help stabilize the region, formulate fair trade agreements or bring aid and security to Iraqi citizens plagued by militant terrorist groups.

          (SIGH....)

Once again - - U.S to the rescue, U.S. takes the risks, U.S. makes the sacrifices, U.S. gets spat on.

Um, he has been. Google the "Pan-Sahel Initiative" and the TSCTI. Sub-Saharan Africa will be the next front on which the oil wars are fought. Of course, under the banner of "anti-terrorism."

FOUR Western oil companies are close to signing oil contracts with the Iraqi Government that will return them to the country 36 years after losing their oil concession when Saddam Hussein rose to power.

Exxon Mobil, BP, Shell and Total, the original partners in the Iraq Petroleum Company before the industry was nationalised by Saddam, as well as Chevron and a number of smaller oil producers, had been in talks with the Iraqi Oil Ministry, The New York Times reported yesterday, citing information from the ministry and oil companies.

FTA-(jimopinion link):But the deals do nothing to allay suspicions within the Arab world and the American public that the US went to war in Iraq to secure its oil wealth.

To be announced on June 30, the contracts will be awarded on a no-bid basis.

An Iraqi Oil Ministry spokesman told the newspaper yesterday that the companies had been chosen because they had been advising the ministry without charge for two years, and because these companies had the required technology.

A total of 46 companies, including firms from China, India and Russia, were providing similar assistance to Iraq but were not awarded contracts.

The oil companies are just that...companies. Every other company in America has to eat the $hit sandwich and loose money when the chips are down. Oil shouldn't be any different. Oh...your $hit blew up, take a hit like the auto industry is. Too much power...time to take it back..http...">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rJb3Lcvtn4M">bac...

Probably will. Look how many times has this happened in this country during the summer when most of the world is on vacation. Vacations which most of the time means we're driving somewhere? If its not this then its an explosion or a work action. I don't know why we're surprised

Get something clear here, my fellow Americans. The REASON we won't let the oil companies dig in our off-shore grounds -- that's right, you vermin of the GOP -- OUR OFF-SHORE lands' because when they did, they ruined our beaches, our natural resources, scum-bags. NOT OIL. Then you allow some scum-bag to buffalo your greedy asses into thinking that nature's against you slime-balls? For what? Think nature is a mole Democrat? If you had half the brain your mother implanted in your sorry asses, you know better. What happened, momma drop you down the stairs once too often? Daddy spend too long in the war? And, why is that, you sperm-cells? Bush rotated your fathers, brothers, and sisters in HIS LITTLE WAR?

                  America, you are pathetic..........

Personally, as someone who live off the coast of SoCal (Playa Del Rey) I don't know if I want off shore drilling. One of the big cogs of California economy is tourism. People come here for the weather and the beaches. Who is going to come if there is some sort of oil spill? Are you hayseeds in the mid-west going to compensate us? No. Is the federal government going to clean it up? NO, oh wait a minute, they've done a good job rebuilding New Orleans.

Wake the hell up people. Drilling in ANWAR and off shore California and Florida is nothing more than a political issue desgined to f up Democrats. I heard conservatives on NPR yesterday say that even if we did that, it would take years for that oil to be converted into oil and brought to market. Geez you people need to start thinking for yourselves and stop listening to Faux News for once

Boo-hoo ... poor Shell Oil. Well, I don't know about you but I think there is an element not being reported in this story. We have another 'militant' group attacking those who would be their financial saviours. I wonder how many Nigerians are working for Shell in a meaningful way. My civilized western brothers will earnestly suggest that there are no Nigerians trained to do work in the petrol industry. Too specialized ... need engineering degrees and the bulk of the population: dumb, ignorant, and untrainable. Their universities produce only militant warriors, half-trained doctors and engineers. The way I see it ... Shell has an obligation to use as much local labor as possible. I guarantee this is not happening. These 'militants' want a share of the economic bonanza or they will continue to be annoying bystanders while watching their country being raped again.

This is a great article written by a great author. It's a little long, but easy reading and will really help to understand the greater context over and above what the Big Media allows us to know.

"Could a bunch of Nigerian militants in speedboats bring about a U.S. recession? Blowing up facilities and taking hostages, they are wreaking havoc on the oil production of America's fifth-largest supplier. Deep in the Niger-delta swamps, the author meets the nightmarish result of four decades of corruption."
