I might be off on this Oscar but admitting that individual contributions to the countries economic well being is the first step in saying that the individual is important. Recognition of the individual and not the state sort of goes against communist ideas, where this will lead to is still unclear but competition among the working class can be a good thing. I wonder if this has to do with Cuba having a bit more money coming in from oil .

Let's end the embargo. Let's trade with them. Cubans would love Americans. Plus those sandwiches they make are yummy.

But haven't you heard......Cuba is an 'enemy of the US'. Until they COMPLETELY change their stand on human rights, communist ideas AND hold fair elections (wait is that Cuba or China) 'we won't sit down with enemies of the US.'
Of course the BETTER choice would be to open a channel with Cuba on January 21, 2009 since THAT is the first day we will have a President that understands the same thing that EVERY President in the history of this Nation (EXCEPT George W. Bush and the guy trying to replace him -John McCain) has.....talking to our enemies is MORE IMPORTANT then talking to our friends!
Anyone heard the saying "keep your friends close and your enemies closer"? Someone just MIGHT want to remind Dumbya of that one.

If they are going toward a more market-based system, Cuba is moving away from Communism.
It'd be nice if Daily US News learned basic reporting principles .. like attributing sources and facts. Otherwise, it's merely unfounded opinion.

Not "every president" has understood that principle you just invented, raats6662. For example, such Presidents as John Kennedy, Lyndon Johnson, Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, Ronald Reagan, George H. W. bush, and Bill Clinton ALL refused to "open such a channel" to Cuba, but they ALL were willing to talk to friendly nations.
In fact, your principle doesn't seem to have any foundation in reality at all. But we can be certain that you don't like the current president, and that you are willing to say virtually anything stupid if you think that it makes HIM look bad.
You need to grow up, raats6662.

The problems in Cuba are not because of the lack of diplomatic relations with the United State, there is no longer an embargo, because Cuba has diplomatic and trade relationships with all other nations. Heck, we even sell them rice from Arkansas.
The problems in Cuba are caused by extreme left wing policies called communism. Socialism in any of it's "isms" never works anywhere it's tried but capitalism works everywhere it's tried. Now maybe if Cuba does move toward a market oriented society they will solve their problems.

"Heck, we even sell them rice from Arkansas."
Arkansas produces more rice than the rest of the world put together.

Then would someone like to tell me WHY Cuba is 'an enemy of the United State' while China and Korea AREN'T?
We openly TRADE with both countries, the President is going to the ONLY Olympics he's attended during his Presidency (even though one was held in this country), BOTH have nuclear weapons capable of striking the US and BOTH have documented human right issue FAR worse then anything that has come out of Cuba in 40 years.
So please, tell me WHY Cuba is so much worse then China or Korea?
MAYBE, if we made China an 'enemy of the US' we wouldn't have anybody to borrow money from? We better NOT pi$$ them off, otherwise who is going to pay for Dumbya illegal war?!?!

Raul has a different agenda than Fidel had and things are improving for the Cuban people. Positive development.

It's time to establish better relations with Cuba.
We need to set a standard of Democracy, but keep diplomatic channels open. This could be a good oppotunity now that Castro has stepped down and Bush is heading for the exit sign.

Peace will only come to Cuba when Bush is dead. Tell ya' a little secret, if the first American I ever trusted was some CIA-clown (George Hubert Walker Bush), you can bet the farm America is one place I wouldn't trust!!! Would you?
But, right you are! Oddly, while Baptista openly traded with America (great cane, and cigars), our beloved CIA made it impossible to gain their trust again. Bush will never let Cuba be free, damned fart-face screwed everything to hell and back including the Bay of Pigs fiasco.
Incidentally, you may recall the "Cuban Connection" after JFK was taken-out? Guess who was even in that closet at the Watergate complex? May I presume we all know what happened then? PS: Richard Milhouse Nixon was the guy who named George HW Bush to head the CIA in '72. I am sadly one boring ol' fart...

It is only a minor change in policy and it no way indicates that Cuba is about to give up communism or one party dictatorship.

Cool Dudes and Dudettes, history-time: As most of you already know, please forgive the reiteration, I know more about Cuba than anyone at this site; save, fellow swampies of the 82nd Airborne Division, dear friends born in Cuba or fellow blue-water travelers of the South Atlantic. OpaLocka (raised as a munchkin) was a quiet Seminole village until WW-II. For sub-hunters it was ideally located nor' west of Miami, Dade County, Florida (ironically also the nor' west quadrant of what you know today as the Burmmuda Triangle). T'was another life, another time.
Fidel Castro overthrew a US-back dictator named Fulgencio Batista on July 1, 1959 (02:00). Financed by the CIA, Fidel Castro took command after Baptista fled. The CIA had expected full cooperation from Castro. Sadly he, like his predecessor before him, told the CIA to kiss his sweet cane!
As any red-white and blue-blooded CIA operative, Bush took that very badly. Forgive moi, I am boring you.
Your pal, Swampie
Peace
