I haven't used plastic bags in ages. Around here, every supermarket sells fabric bags. I love them, they hold more groceries, they don't tear, and they are useful for transporting other things as well. I used up the last of my plastic bags as small trash can liners, my home is now plastic bag free. Except for the trash bags I have to buy now, lol!

Aaahh well, this should be interesting. I can see the Plastic Bag Secret Police at the Olympics now, arresting and detaining offending merchants, a quick kangaroo court session, and then off to the back of the courthouse for execution. And maybe they will arrest the offending buyers also, confiscating their Olympic momentos for resale on the black market.
Forgive me for my dark imagination. I think it would be great for them to do this, but truthfully folks, China has much more severe and immediate concerns than plastic bags. They are trying to paint a nice little "eco-friendly" picture to make the world think they are on "our" side.
Please God, don't let them call in the loans we owe them for the "Bush-whacked" war in Iraq!!!!!

Chinese culture is conducive to environmental friendliness. But the country as a whole has caused much destruction to the environment because it had to go with the tide of market mechanism to boost up economy, so it had to do a lot of manufacturing at the expense of the environment for consumers in the west to consume in clean environment, and because there are greedy and irresponsible people there just like everywhere else in the world. Exploitation, wide gap between the poor and the rich, manipulation by bad leaders who want to take away ordinary people's freedom, environmental destruction, .... these are world problems. No -ism has supplied satisfactory answers to these yet!
