News – A small but startling sign welcomed the gun lovers who arrived at the National Rifle Association's annual gathering Friday. "Firearms WILL NOT be allowed in Hall A during the Celebration of American Values Leadership Forum."
I love guns, knives, and the 2nd amendment as much as the next guy, in fact i own a nice little arsenal myself.. But i really don't get what the big deal is here. This was an event with a presidential candidate at it...
Nobody in their right mind would allow weapons to be brought into an event with a presidential candidate speaking. It's been like this for a long, long, long time... If the NRA, and or its members have such a problem with it, they should have not had the candidate come and speak at the event in the first place.
The most unsuspecting people are always armed when they walk around our major cities. The police are not everywhere. You have a right to protect yourself.

I find it hard to comprehend why an armed society is necessary. How is it that the US is like this and your neighbor to your north is just the opposite? There must be reasons for the violence and the need to carry a weapon.....
These are just questions I have. I am not judging your love for weapons. I just would like to know how got to this point, where guns are deemed as a necessity of life.
"I just would like to know how got to this point, where guns are deemed as a necessity of life."
Not a necessity, a right. A right to protect yourself, whether it be from man or animal. Our neighbors to the north do not have the same extensive rights because the United Kingdom would not allow it. When we revolted and tossed the Red Coats off U.S. soil, it was a right to bear arms that helped us do it.
Gun laws always have been about keeping the populace under control of the crown dating back to when England first enacted the laws -- back when guns meant artillery and nobles had a habit of overthrowing kings. Remove the guns, and you remove the greatest threat to the crown.
A few weeks ago I posted a story about a fool pulling out his gun and shooting at workers in a store in Florida. Two armed employees drew their firearms and detained the man until police arrived. No one was hurt. Criminals don't abide gun laws. No reason to disarm those who do abide the law.
Also, during the LA riots not long after the Rodney King verdict came out and the idiots in LA decided to start attacking everyone they hated, I noticed a lot of Asians on rooftops armed with rifles protecting their property. Needless to say, they weren't harmed.
On the other hand, a perfectly innocent Reginald Denny - or whatever his name was - was beaten nearly to death by a pack of animals who didn't like a white person driving in their neighborhood. Fortunately, some good-thinking blacks came to his rescue and stopped an attempted murder from becoming a murder.
I think the Red Coats have left the US a long time ago ...I don't believe that you or I could use that as an argument for having an asault rifle or hand gun on our person.
No, but this is the reason the 2nd Amendment exists. The argument is in case a revolution is needed in the future. An armed citizenry is the last defense against tyranny. It also doesn't mean that the United States couldn't be attacked in the future. Put yourself in the position of the colonies, after leaving Britain. 13 small nation-states, with no formal government as of yet and deeply in debt while lacking an army. You'd take the fairly cheap and proven (during the war) way of defending yourself. Citizen militias. Also, what right does any government have to tell me what to do? I reject their right to tell me I can't do something. I choose to not do things due to my own moral code, not a government telling me I cannot. I accept that I can be punished for doing things by society, through some instrument. I do not accept the right of the government to outright tell me I cannot do something.
To greenmac: The Founding Fathers recognized the "God-given Right" to self defense and in this case that meant a gun as opposed to say a bow and arrow or a knife. Who takes a fist or a knife to a gunfight? "Current Technology" is the rule. If "phasers" (lazer pistol) which might be better than a gun become the current technology then I want one to defend myself against those who merely carry a gun or especially those who carry a phaser.
Those who have a CCW whom I know are not "gun crazed loonies" nor do they live in constant fear of violence. But they are armed to be of service to their neighbors and families should the need arise. The Boy Scout Motto is "Be Prepared".

As for our neighbors to the North, they have allowed many things I hope never are established in the USA because of their political philosophy. It seems they did not have a leadership in the early days which thought things through as the Colonies did. Thus we have "A Bill of Rights" which limits government.
Well; Redneck....based on the facts and lifestyle I will take Canada over the USA. You have a great country but overall I find our way of life very safe and satisfying. We also have " A Bill Of Rights" It is called a Charter Of Rights

"It's supposed to be about freedom," said Anne-Marie Biggins of Bethpage as she stood with Brian O'Connor of Farmingdale."
Right! After all, this is America, or at least I thought it was...
This is America BB but not when the great leader is on hand to put for his golden rhetoric on why he feels the common people have no rights. After all, one might be able to nick his pompous arse and there by watch him deflate like a balloon.
I can see a valid reason for the secret service not wanting people armed and close to a presidential candidate. It only takes one loony.
The right to bear arms and CCW permits do acknowledge the rights of various business owners and public entities to say: not in this building. You can carry on your person on the streets, in your car, in many grocery stores - although the stores can say no. Even in many churches, but not in schools, not in most if not all banks, etc, etc.
You're right but look what's happened in our schools and churches. As a CCW holder I'd want me in the crowd if I was president, esp. with Pelosi third in line. As for the other places I carry. I don't have a reason to go into schools but when my renewal came up recently their was a teacher in the class, hmm. Here they not only have to have a sign but have to ask/tell you to leave but then it is concealed or should be. Even where you can wear it exposed, number one it's stupid and second it scares people.
The point is, it only takes one loony to kill ANY of us.
If the guy in the movie next to me, or on the bus, or in the check-out line, is packing heat and is feeling mean about it, I have to swallow the risk?
But McCain doesn't?
This is in line with senator's special health benefits, retirement benefits, and various exemptions from mere laws on discrimination and parking tickets.
THEY want to be safe in crowded places with angry people.
We have to take our chances.
"If the guy in the movie next to me, or on the bus, or in the check-out line, is packing heat and is feeling mean about it, I have to swallow the risk?"
Now you are getting irrational. People who go through the steps to get CCW permits do not "get mean" and go on shooting rampages, no matter how much liberals like pretend they do.
Since CC pasted five years ago there have been two (2) episodes involving CCW holders. One guy shot up a car (domestic) and another in a mall, I didn't hear about that till years later and don't know what happened or the outcome.
When the bill was being discussed and voted on all the liberals were screaming and protesting that it would be "The Wild West" again. I don't know about lives saved to be honest.
My father, and my uncle carried guns all their lives. When my 84 year old uncle was being driven to the Hospital for the last time we asked him if we could "hold" his gun for him, and he gave it up He took it everywhere, Never fired it, Pulled it to defend himself a couple times, but never had to use it. See, most of the time when someone is going to rob you, and your gun is bigger then their knife, they back off. He lived on the North side of Chicago. All the criminals in Chicago have guns, what is a guy to do to defend himself?
Yer pappy nevr used his gun?!! Wommin dey aint got no mor in der haids den a june bug. Ya aught ta be shamed tellin lies like that bout yer pappy. Ever one nos dat a man wid a guns got ter hav it fer da huntin. Makin yer pappy sound like he didn ker enuff bout ya all ter feed ya. Ya all are goin ta the devil fer tellin tales like dat! An you is xtra bad cuz you wuz takin yer pappys guns wid out him knowin. Ya best giv dat der gun whut you stole from yer pappy to the oldest boy chile. Dats his rite ta hav it.
Yer pappy sounds like good peeple but I'm thinking dat he shuddin takin a switch to yer behind fer mixin wid da men folk an tellin tales like dis. Its my God givin rite ta tell ya dat all ya all sittee wimmin gotta lern yer place an dats wid da darnin. Now git!

incoherent, yet unfunny.
a Goppy wannabe?
please no
I am not sure how it works in other states, but the right to carry in VA is pretty universal, except in churches, schools, bars or restaurants serving alcohol, and government offices. The concealed carry permit only lets you carry concealed, where those with no permit may carry openly. Some businesses post signs about it, but basically, if your place of business is accessible to the public, it falls under the laws above, and it is only courtesy to the owners/management that prohibits carrying, not their signs. VA permits are reciprocal with TN and perhaps other states too.
"I can see a valid reason for the secret service not wanting people armed and close to a presidential candidate." Well I can see why they would WANT that too. I can also see why they would want a piece of chocolate cake. It doesn't mean they should get something, just because they want it.
