MSNBC is reporting that at least 2 chemical plants in the worst hit area have collapsed and workers are buried in the rubble. Liquid ammonia is leaking out of the plants and they are evacuating people in the area

Broken water pipes were ruptured and some areas are reporting flooding

Say a prayer for these people

You're in Thailand, right? It was a mighty strong earthquake and I imagine aftershocks continuing.

I have dear friends in this area. So far, they have not responded to my emails. I hope all is well.

yes, we too have few of our friends (two Americans and one Swedish) in disaster area, but South East of Sichuan, which is provincial capital of Chengdu. Both I and my wife tried to call their cell phone, but no answer. Also, our friend, a senior editor for biggest Chinese Weekly Magazine, here in Beijing, called too a few of his reporters and only on, that was in other province answered... Either all communication has collapsed or ,,, (I will not write about it - we are still in China)...

Let's hope for the best.

Wish you nothing but good news, MA, in contacting your friends. Can imagine the anxiety about their safety.

It is stories such as this that show how fragile we as people are, whether it is hurricanes, tornadoes, blizzards or earhquakes these natuaral disasters seem to be one thing that we can never be truely prepared for and my feelings are always the same regardless of where this happens, I can only feel sorry for those who have lost loved ones.

So very sad.

My prayers are with them.

Side note: I will actually be going on a 3 week trip to Southern China next spring. It's a shame it is not this year so I could volunteer to help.

It's a good thought, tang.

I was only 200 miles away when the dreadful Kobe earthquake, Japan, killed over 6,000 in 1995, but made useless excuses why I couldn't go down there (I might've been in the way, etc.) In retrospect, I could've driven a carload of blankets down there (it was January), or something -- but did nothing.

I'm in bangkok thailand and i don't feel about that

'mastraud'.

That, maybe can be correct. You couldn't feel in Bangkok if you was on ground walking, in car, in bus or sleeping. We was in gym and didn't felt either, but our friends, many of them are working in high raisers have to run on the streets of Beijing. From our gym/spa (second floor) we had spectacular view of so many people on street - without to know WHY.

Let us all pray for the best.

Sichuan (Szechuan)Province is home to some of the spicy Chinese foods you eat at Chinese restaurants. But unlike in the America's, no two restaurants prepare them the same in China. What you might know as Kung Pao Chicken is called Gong Bao Ji Ding in China. Sometimes it has cucumbers in it, sometimes it doesn't.

"pongping"

HOW THE HELL YOU CAN TALK ABOUT CHICKEN? RESTAURANTS? FOOD?

Don't you feel pain and suffering of these that grieving after lost lives?

Maybe chicken still has bigger brain than many, many from mankind.

I share that outrage, MA. Can't fathom such comments at all, at a time like this. (But read his bio!)

Sure "blinkers", I did and I read some of his post. Here is one of his comments about worms you can read here:

Hope the Chinese government allows any essential assistance from international agencies, governments, NGOs, etc., full access to the affected region.

In disasters like this speed is absolutely essential in providing effective relief to the survivors.

avatar
Reply

We hope too. Just remembering our government didn't let our own agencies to act (right away) during New Orleans disaster.

Maybe Chinese learned lessen from us because they already dispatched over 15,000 trupps to the disaster area.

heard it was 8.0...

Disasters like these really give you perspective on life, for those who can help...I hope they do, often times people think back and say to themselves 'I should have, I could have' but didn't.

I can't even imagine how frightening that must have been, and the devastating after effects that they are suffering now.

avatar

It's always sad to see others suffer. I wish them well.

We always send help if allowed, let's try to keep on topic and not turn this into a New Orleans bash fest Miles, there are times when using tragedy as a platform to bash your favorite hated administration isn't considered in good taste.

avatar
Reply

And, from when telling the truth started being bashing? Just "monkeying" around is not enough.

B.T.W. I am republican and I voted for this administration.

avatar
Reply

This still isn't N.O, besides when you look at the entire story of the N.O. problem; it was the local government that caused many of the problems. The facts are that we are indeed trying to send help. Trying to lay blame only on this administration is wrong, no matter whom you voted for or which party you say you belong to.

hehehe glad you read my profile, there is nothing wrong with monkeying around, most people on this site take themselves way to seriously and hole themselves in way too high regard.

avatar
Reply

I agree with you. I was "monkeying" too, but I worked in two (2) nights as a voluntary packing medication in containers that was air lifted same night... and I am an artist and my wife too.

Have great morning. It is almost 11:00 PM in China.

The only positive thought that came to my mind, when I heard of this terrible earthquake, was that it will be much easier than in Myanmar to help quickly. The Chinese government speaks openly about the catastrophy this time, and the first concrete reactions, mostly led by the military, seemed to be quite well organized. Perhaps, this is a possibility for the world, to show that nobody is against the Chinese people and solidarity with the victims has nothing to do with the behavior of the government.

I will bet that when most people read this news they had no idea about Sichuan, not where it is and anything about it. Nothing! When you put a place and its people in some context that you can relate to, you can start to develop some connection to and perhaps some empathy for them. Now, some guy can go down to his corner chinese restaurant and know that just possibly that guy in the back making his food comes from that province of the Four Rivers, the one that was so devastated. People can get on here and write stuff such "oh that's terrible, but does nothing". How I am connected to Sichuan, you cannot know. You can judge me - but you don't know me!

avatar

I know only what you wrote in this post and what did you stated in your profile. That is a fact, my friend.

Is that why you are stalking me and following me around? Or is there another reason? I can take the honest criticism you folks laid on me here. And I know that you are right about that and this article because I did not explain myself well enough.

But for you, MilesAway, to follow me around on Propellor as a stalker is very inappropriate.

I agree with you and I do apologizes to you... but if somebody WRITE POST like you did, about FOOD and restaurants in TIME like this and same time, I worked in two (2) nights as a voluntary packing medication in containers (Beijing) that was air lifted same night... and I am an artist and my wife too.

B.T.W. a "blinkrs" suggested me to read your PROFILE. I read and I made my comment.

I would like to be friends with all HUMANS, but many of us behave worst than ANIMALS and I hope you are NOT in that CATEGORY.

With LOVE from an American in China.
