"Republicans want more drilling, more consumption, and more tax giveaways for the big oil companies,'' Stabenow, from Michigan, said in the Democratic Party's weekly radio address. ``Democrats say that those are exactly the policies that got us into this mess to begin with."

"A plan backed by Democrats, who hold a majority in the House and Senate, ``ends the billions of dollars in tax breaks for big oil companies whose executives have been hauling record profits while we pay record prices,'' Stabenow said.

This what I have to say about this:

Don't worry the Dems will block offshore just to make sure that China will get that very same oil !!!!!!!!!!!

Stabenow can't even play buy the DNC rules, where was she when it came time to count the votes of the people of Michigan for the Democratic delegates. Clean your own closet out first Mrs Stabenow! Funny how her husband was caught with a prostitute but NOBODY here on Libscape has made one negative comment about it.

perhaps because nobody gives a damn. Why didn't you say something about it yourself if you feel that strongly about it?

avatar

What is wrong with prostitues, Mc? And exactly what does that have to do with an energy bill Bush has asked Congress to pass?

Please keep in mind that this story is about Democrats criticizing Bush's--and McCain's--POLICIES. Things they actually DO while in office that affect YOU.

The person speaking isn't running for president and neither is her husband or his hooker.

Drill, drill, drill that's the only hope until there "is" a workable alternative. Liberal democrat policies make people suffer. End this liberal democrat torture of Americans now!!

avatar

ok lets not drill and do the bio fuel thing that Al Gore cast the deciding vote on in 1994 that is now starving allot of people ! Maybe starving people is the more moral thing, I guess that is the way you think if you are a democrat !

Stoners: What's your problem with more drilling? We know where the oil is and we're the best, most efficient drillers in the world.

Why not tap more domestic oil rather than use our fertile farm land to grow fuel? We're not ready for non-food ethanol yet.

Regarding SUV's: If you were a young mother who had to strap your babies in the back seat several times a week, you would want a vehicle high enough so that you didn't have to lean over to do it.

lol... I really hope you aren't seriously suggesting something like drilling ANWR so baby machines don't have to bend over quite so often...

I do think simon is right about the American oil industry's ability to drill. They have historically cleaned up the messes they have made and done minimal damage to our environment from what I can see. Therefore, I don't have any problem with them drilling anywhere.

I do agree with your comment on the SUV's though. I have one that is now 5 years old. It will soon be a relic of the past if we don't solve our energy problems and fast. That we should provide cheap gas so someone can conveniently keep from exerting a little of their own energy is ludicrous. You were right on target about bending over, and so have a lot of others been on the same target, which is the main reason we are in the mess today to begin with.

We made the mess with stupid legislation.

Which legislation would that be? Are you suggesting the oil industry should be turned loose to do as it wishes with the natural resources of the US?

An excerpt from a different story ...

Key to winning support in the Senate was a provision that gives four Gulf Coast states -- Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama -- 37.5 percent of the royalties collected from oil and gas production on federal leases off their shores.

Gulf Coast lawmakers had sought the money for coastal restoration projects to repair damage from storms like Hurricane Katrina.

According to congressional estimates, that provision could redistribute about $60 billion in federal leasing fees to states over the next 25 years. After taxes, drilling royalties are the government's second-biggest revenue source.

Natural gas users, from farmers to manufacturers, have backed the drilling bill because they hope the extra supplies will mean lower energy bills.

"After taxes, drilling royalties are the government's second-biggest revenue source".

How can that be when the evil oil companies and their representatives in Government are screwing us so badly?

Why not demand the government target new revenues above a certain point from oil royalties to assist with some program such as Medicare or universal healthcare?

I personally have no problem drilling oil right in the heart of Alaska or anywhere else it is. The oil companies have shown they can do such without effecting the environment too adversely. The problem is giving Oil companies tax breaks for any reason. These companies know how to pass their expenses down the line. Our government needs to further regulate our natural resources when private companies tap them to make a profit, that is for our protection. Supply and demand will take care of the rest. We ought to drill domestically and tap all we can so we are not dependent on foreign oil. Our competition with foreigners will keep the cost of gas down to a minimum. We should also be encouraging the exploration of new energy sources which can also compete to keep pricing affordable. A summer time gasolene tax break is a ruse as it will save the average United Statesican driver a whopping $30 for the summer. Wowsers! Now, that will jump start the economy.

They are the highest taxed industry in the USA by far ...

Maybe you should research what the oil drillers did to the environment along the Louisiana coast. Between them and the Army Corps of Engineers we came close to losing a whole city. They haven't been stepping up to help clean up the mess they made down there. Very few mega-corps can be counted on to do the ethically right thing if it might cost them money. They have to be forced in to it.

If they have not been made to clean up their mess as you claim, whose fault is it? The local, state, and federal government can make them clean up the mess and should. They have in times past. It is called regulation. I firmly believe in taxing the oil companies and regulating them, and frankly, I could care less whether they are the highest taxed industry in the USA as long as enough of the tax money goes to helping clean up the environment when there are problems. I do have a problem with state taxes on oil. I believe all natural resources in the US should be 100% owned by the US collectively, since that is how our union was formed. I do not believe states should own and control our resources a part from the rest of the country.

That does smack of Communism. They say 80% of the land west of the Mississippi is government owned now.

You're against private ownership?

avatar
Reply

What I am against is private ownership of our natural resources. They were not put here by individuals, but by our Creator. All of us have been commanded to be care takers of them. Water is one of our greatest natural resources. We cannot survive without it. Do you think only private citizens should control our water?

I am not against private ownership of land and the responsibility that goes with protecting the natural resources on the land. This is an age old problem that private owners and governments have been fighting over for years. It hardly makes me a communist because I believe that the natural resources of this world should be community owned. That means oil, gas, water, minerals, forest, etc. I do believe a land owner can maintain rights to these resources in conjunction with community and conservation. After all, they are for the most part, the real caretakers and should be justly compensated for their care. They just shouldn't own control of it, in my opinion.

avatar
Reply

BTW, the %of land owned by our Federal Government is 28.8% in the US. 54.1% owned in the West, so I don't know where you are getting your 80% figure. I do believe in private ownership of land where the land owners abide by the laws of the people. I hope your "smack of Communism" rhetoric is not some McCarthy like attempt to discredit what I was saying. I am no communist in any classical sense, but I do believe in community and the responsibilities of private land owners to respect their communities. We need not get into personalities in discussing these legitimate issues do we?

You know guys. Bush did not and never had any policy when he stole the elections in 2004 thanks Jeb & Katherine.

His only mission was to invade and take over its oil wealth and stuff up the oil companies. It went bad but he still stands by his plan.

Let's define Bush. He's from a wealthy family that built it's wealth from war profiteering. It didn't matter who they helped or helped them so long as they accumulated wealth and power. There is little care for who dies in Iraq, innocent mothers or fathers, children. It didn't matter who suffered under hurrican Katrina. It didn't matter if people were tortured or dignity was taken from them. It didn't matter about removing Habeaus Corpus or violating our Constitution. There is little care to find Bin Laden in the end.

The rich know exactly his motives; that's why they support him. The average blue collar worker who voted for him was simply too stupid to figure things out.

The interesting fact of history is this: you can't take the wealth with you when you die. The Pharoahs of Egypt tried deperately to take things they accumulated with them. It never works.
