hdthehn,

This will go down as one of the most famous Freudian slips of all time right along with the biggest lies of all time; the check's in the mail; I love you; and other certainly more sexually explicit phrases.

Now we have somewhat affirmed one of the real reasons we went into Iraq, which was proposed by many on these posts for a while. Besides, other more implausible reasons such as Bush's revenge, WMD's, nation building, and bringing democracy to the Middle East didn't seem to pan out like this reason. After so much denial about this being the real purpose, it seems that it's the most logical and McCain's utterances gives it more credence.

Let's see how they explain that one away.

He's trying to get a running start on breaking GWB's record for mis-speaking before even getting elected [ever]!

Here's the quote:

"My friends, I will have an energy policy that we will be talking about, which will eliminate our dependence on oil from the Middle East that will prevent us from having ever to send our young men and women into conflict again in the Middle East."

Sounds like he's saying oil is the only reason to ever go to war in the Middle East.

And here's his "explanation," once his gaffe had been pointed out:

"The Congressional Record is very clear: I said we went to war in Iraq because of weapons of mass destruction.

McCain knew exactly what he was saying. He just forgot that the official excuse for going into Iraq in 2003 was the non-existent WMD rather than control of oil.

Why can't Republicans just tell the truth? I'm sure the 28% who stand behind them would have been perfectly happy to invade Iraq to steal its oil. And I'm sure they'd be thrilled to do it again in another country--let's say Iran, for instance.
