News – Northwestern University withdrew an invitation for the Reverend Jeremiah Wright to receive an honorary degree at this year's commencement.
Its a degree in Theology. How would you suggest we separate this? Or aren't we allowed to study religion any more? Only on nutscape?
Man when the libs get mad at ya for dissing their guy they act! I bet the Rev is laughing about it.
Have you ever noticedâ;¦ the biggest scallywags have a 'reverend' in front of their names?
Reverend Jerry Falwell.
Reverend Pat Robertson.
Reverend Ted Haggard.
Reverend Jim Jones.
You are correct. Reverends SUCK!
Yeah they do
Reverend AL Sharpton
Reverend Jesse Jackson
And all the others, see I'm fair and balanced, unlike you.
Jackson is the master of the "shakedown" for his causes
(which include himself, but if you've notice all of thoae guys have had to live as blacks in a white nation,,
Maybe they have a few more negative and threatening experiences in their lives for just being the color that they are than Pat, Jerry, Jim, Jim, Billy and Sung Yung..
In order of despicability the worst has to have been
father O'Connor the WWII radio anti-Semite, next Jim Jones,
next Sung Yun Moon, next Farrakhan who is a trouble maker who hasn't said much since 9/11, closely followed by
Swaggart, Haggard and Jim Baker (Tammmy Fae's husband) who bilked millions to accumulate near-billions,Jerry Falwell, who said gays cause 9/11, Pat Robertson,
who, amongst other things, said Sharon deserved the stroke,
and lastly Sharpton, who often races to the wrong side in regional racially matters (Tawana Brawley, Duke rape case)
but has NOT caused mass suicides, nor has he scooped up the life savings of the vulnerable.
How about the 1 who kept telling his "parishioners" that he needed something like $7Mil or God would take him? Was that Oral Roberts?
YES..Oral is up there, and he's been subject to 2 or 3 more scandals since..Something about a statue, and also mis-appropriation of funds and parental uproar over some practices..
Billy Graham is also ahead of Sharpton for his anti-Semitic beliefs while he built an empire with an ear to 6 Presidents.
I think these people are afraid that a black president may
be willing to listen to the needs of black people from any of their spiritual leaders, and it petrifies them..
Obviously, Wright should be out of the inner circle, but whoever has been in the Presidential inner-circle has certainly been self-interested.
He's 68 years old and his age is waring poorly on him.
he's turned into Walter Matthou.
This happens to aging people in varying degrees.
Wright is tapped out.
So, are you saying that religious leaders should express no positions on political issues? I would say that when a political leader supports an electoral candidate or otherwise dictates how a congregation should vote, she/he has crossed the line and is now a lobbying organization.
However, if you take the position that religious leaders should take NO position on political issues, then do you condemn Martin Luther King, Mahatma Ghandi, Desmond Tutu?
Someone who cares as deeply about others as he cares for his own well-being is of necessity thrust into politics, because politics affect our well-being.
nature - speaking from the pulpit, the religious organization, and speaking outside of the church as an individual are different.
But we all know the GOPer preachers do the same thing all the time! This is nuts you are saying it's ok if we do it but if you do it's wrong. The last i look this was America where if you get to do it and it's within the law we all get to do it if we so chooses! I cam name a long list of right wing preachers who preached politics from the pulpit. Just spit in the wind and you are likely to hit one of them!
I still feel he has the right to say whatever he likes. But along with that freedom comes the responsibility for him to accept the consequences of what he says. It's unfortunate that every time he opens his mouth he provides fodder for the right wing attack goons to continue to put his association with Obama in the limelight. It would be very helpful for him right now to just lay low fro awhile. I fear that's not possible with a man like Wright, however, he has had bomb threats to his church and threats on his person. I think that Wright being who he is, he will fight back with every ounce of his being.
AG cleared up all this responsibility by association crap the other day when I questioned her about her friends nasty , insulting and Unchristian like comments...
She told me this..."I'm not responsible for my friends...only myself"
Now I get it.
I know many people, especially in the Black community, who would consider their pastor a friend. Not to mention who have friends who mentor or teach their children. Don't be silly.
All I know is that if I had racist "friends" in positions of authority who think that US government invented crack or AIDS to kill black people...I wouldn't let them be around my children, or listen to them tell me about it every single Sunday for 20 years.
What if your "friend" began to age ungracefully and become an
angry old man, unlike how you would want to remember your grandfather?
Would you try to set things right and maintain his integrity, or would you publicly lambaste him and ignore all that was good in his life just to save your precious hide??
Perhaps a happy medium?
I think that is what Obama tried.
So, are you a turncoat or someone who is willing to take a few hits for someone who was a once proud mentor??
Aren't those good questions to determine the moral fibre of a potential President.
Obviously, you have committed yourself toward supporting
turncoats... (well, after Scooter, nothing surprises me)

FTA:
Wright, former pastor to Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama, was selected to be honored at the June ceremony in Evanston, Illinois, on the recommendation of faculty committees, Alan Cubbage, vice president for university relations, said in a statement.
``In light of the controversy around Dr. Wright and to ensure the celebratory character of commencement not be affected, the university has withdrawn its invitation to Dr. Wright,'' Cubbage said.
Maybe now he will shut his mouth, it's starting to give adverse feedback now. Consequences!
no but I'd bet they would give degrees to Bush or Cheney or Rumsfeld..
who hates America worse..????
Dang, Will, me and you are split a lot on these posts as I find us on the same side and the opposite side sometimes, but you just made a good point.
that's what makes America great...
Have you read Wright's "God Damn America" sermon? The sentiment was directed specifically at the U.S. Government, and it was all about the lies, the imperialism, the unneccessary wars, the class inequities, etc.
In other words, Wright was raging about the same injustices that anger so many of us. But the selected quotes and the media framing have even people who would largely agree with what Wright said running around P!ssed off at him.
I say, read the text of the sermon, find out exactly what he was saying, and go from there.
While Wright is certainly a controversial character, the slam Obama folks have, in many instances, done a masterful job of 1) taking Wright's comments out of all context and 2)re-constructing what was actually said in a sermon into ten-word slogans with the exact opposite meaning.
Its esactly what thye did wth Flush Limpaw and his slam the troops bit to make it seem like he didnt say what he said.
...and also McCain's hundred years in Iraq bit.
When reality doesn't quite mesh with opinion, people have a tendency to want to modify reality rather than their opinions.
This is petty at best and almost childish and silly! This is an old man how much does this serve to harm his establish position 0. They acted like fools in doing this i don't anyone knew or if even knew cared that they gave him an honorary degree. IT"S A JOKE, I see this as more putting him in his place than anything else!
Of course Cheney or Bush would be invite-able , because political correctness is
mandatory for institutions and Wright has not expressed himself in a non-offensive manner.
Who knows what he'd say at a commencement?
The fact that he has been un-invited makes perfect sense.
bush, Cheney or any of the evildoers know how to conduct themselves at public events, much like the wolf in Little Red Riding Hood, who also would have been a potential commencement speaker. So would Dr. Jeckyll.
how many honorary degrees have the president and vice president received lately? or at any other time?
That may be...
"Maybe now he will shut his mouth, it's starting to give adverse feedback now. Consequences!"
Oh that sounds so racist! lol
Exactly how is that a racist comment?
This Reverend Wright is something to behold!
He's brilliant in delivering a speech, in using the English language and in convincing others of his message.
Trouble is he's a raving idiot in terms of his beliefs! He's exactly the kind of Black leader who is doing more harm than good for ALL Americans, especially Black Americans.
Instead of bring people together, he's making every effort to keep us separated because, "see, we're different." Yeah Reverend Wright, we all are different, but we all are Americans in this country with EQUAL OPPORTUNITY for all, so when are your followers going to start doing something for themselves and stop blaming somebody else?
Too bad but Obama has been fatally wounded by his "good friend", Reverend Wright.
Thank God for BILL COSBY and his leadership on these matters!
I wish BILL COSBY would run for president. I think he would win in a landslide, if he could get the black vote.
I love it. Liberals eating their own. Last year you clowns would have agreed with everything this nut said, but now that he is a thorn in the side of the "chosen one's" candidacy he is a pariah.
TYPICAL LIBERAL HYPOCRISY
That's an insult a GOPer calling us this "TYPICAL LIBERAL HYPOCRISY" You can keep this one we pass. Most libs I see agree with the rev to an extent but think he went too far on some things. We are not eating our own, unlike you GOPers, we don't have a problem saying one of ours is wrong when they are! Now if we can just get one of you to say that about bush!
Dave (who is often dizzy from spinning):
You MUST eat your words NOW..
No one here would have agreed with most of what he said, but you are a leopard who never changes its spots.
You never cease top amaze us about how poorly YOUR words are expressed, but how easily you put words into other people's mouths. You are a pariah here (hence all your positive votes), because what you say is "Nuts". (mixed with a fine blend of sour grapes, but never accurate)
...Dizzy Davy starts every day with sour Grape Nuts, this gets his stomach spinning, the rest follows quickly...
