News – More than half the teen girls taken from a polygamist compound in west Texas have children or are pregnant, state officials said Monday.
With cultists, what's not to hate?
Their "victims" who then victimize their own children in the name of God aren't very lovable.
They look like poorly dressed "Stepford Wives" for crissake!
Look in their eyes...
I agree... I've seen some interviews with some of the women, and they come off as people victimized by the government, families torn apart... but then I remember just what the situation is... of course, many of the things that the women are guilty of, they're guilty of simply because they have no idea they're doing wrong. That doesn't, however, make it OK, as a matter of fact, in a way, it makes it even worse. The "Stepford Wives" thing is a good comparison.
You won't have to hear about what happens to the kids after they go to foster care and childrens homes. Now the real horror starts.
I can't believe I agree with you Drop. fact is, these children were taken from their mothers. It's the men who are the alleged asses. why should these children be taken from their mothers?
Why should we disagree about everything? There is enough data on kids lost in the foster care system to worry about what will happen to them now. Many kids turn 18 and their foster families tell them to stop contacting them. What will happen to kids who aren't even socialized properly? It won't be in their best interest to remove everyone familiar from their lives. I know that this religious group had a whacky lifestyle but there's data to support that even if a mother is a drug addict, her kids will do better emotionally staying with her if she's trying to recover than if they are placed with foster families. I know from my own experience, working out of town during the week and having a two-year-old boy, that his relationship with his mother is vital. Children need to remain bonded with their mothers instead of being passed around to paid mercenary parents.
Question: I doubt that there are that many more females than males born into that sect, so if men have multiple wives, do some men have no wives at all or do some women have multiple husbands? The numbers won't add up otherwise.
I seem to recall that there were ~ 100 men and 400 women and children at the comound in TX
I did find this information:
The succession of male leaders of the FDLS are seen by their followers as having been chosen by God. Only by having 3 or more wives can a man attain salvation, according to the church's beliefs. The males in the group face the challenge of being able to find marriageable partners with equal numbers of male and female members, not all of the men may have multiple wives. They deal with this in a number of ways. Young women and girls of increasingly younger ages (as young as 13 in some cases) are being married to men 2-3 times their age. Young men in the community are often excommunicated for exceedingly minor offenses, such as listening to music or coming home late for a curfew. The young men are then put out into the outside world with little education and few social skills, earning them the name of "the lost boys."
In addition, the church follows a practice called "placing," by which young women and girls are said to be chosen by God (through the prophet leader) as wives for the various men in the sect. If the leader becomes unhappy with one of the men in the group, he may choose to take one or more of his wives away and "give" them to other men, as punishment.
A total of 53 girls between the ages of 14 and 17 are in state custody after a raid 3 1/2 weeks ago at the Yearning For Zion Ranch in Eldorado.
What I want to know is how many were 16 and 17 y/o. It is alot like the way the anitgun groups use the numbers on kids and gun deaths, they use in many cases 0-18, but the numbers change when you compare the 16-18(vast majority) to the 0-15(very few). In this case, how do the numbers compare to the average big city high school?
For those of you that do not understand polygynous societies (polygamy is more than one marriage, polygyny is more than one wife, polyandry is more than one husband), typically what happens is at some point, "unruly" and "disobedient" boys are chased off and excluded by the older men who want the young girls to themselves. Sometimes, but not generally, older women are likewise dumped in favor of the younger ones. This results in a very cruel and unhealthy society where young girls are raped, young boys are driven off before their education is complete and without parental support, and often older women are left in poverty at their end of their childbearing years.
Polyandry, on the otherhand, while far less frequent, generally occurs in remote, rugged territories where older women will marry more than one husband because there simply aren't enough women to go around.
A woman who can't find a man in a city, or who is older, divorced or widowed, would often go to remote, rugged locations where men greatly outnumbered women and she would generally request of her husbands large dowries that included land, a nice home, and chattels in her own name. Multiple husbands would be "scheduled" to visit with her and her children. This often worked out well where the men were gone for a month or two hunting or looking for gold, diamonds or other precious minerals. All it took was good scheduling.
But as for polygyny, it never really works out. Older wealthier men collect young women and toss away the older women and boys. They rape young women, as happened in the case here.
The larger question is, why was there no public outcry that it took the State's Atty FOUR years to go after them. That was the ridiculous and disgusting part of this case. Apparently, numerous credible complaints about this behavior began no less than 4 years ago.
I am just wondering if polyandry will be revived in China where there are many young men, but few young women because girl fetuses have been aborted for so long. This is also occuring in India. Unless other areas having shortages of men are willing to permit immigration, it would seem that this would be a reasonable solution to these issues.
That's true but how would the women survive on that compound?
These women are unable to function in society. You would be leaving the children to be raised by women who believe in this lifestyle
Isn't it better to remove all of the children including the teens and try to help them lead "normal" lives?
I wonder how they make the money to survive. That compound is huge and must have cost a small fortune to build
"Isn't it better to remove all of the children including the teens and try to help them lead "normal" lives? "
The danger in this is the question becomes: what is a "normal" life. One could make the argument that having gay parents isn't "normal." Or that being a single parent isn't "normal." Or that someone who practices Wicca (usualy a fairly innocuous if misguided practice) isn't "normal" and shouldn't be allowed to raise children.
Obviously forced marriage/impregnation of young teens isn't normal today (though it wasn't uncommon/unheard of in 'recent' history) and should be criminal (along with polygamy/polygyny -- perhaps), but the danger is in drawing the line or allowing the government to do so in a way that will put others whom many would consider "normal" in the pot with the nutjobs.
I think the most important first step is to protect the kids
The last report from the Dallas paper indicated that 31 of 53 girls ages 14 to 17 have children, are pregnant or both.
After the issue with the kids is settled, I hope they go after the men
This isn't simply an out of the mainstream lifestyle
This was sexual abuse of children. And don't forget that the "mothers" of these children condoned the behavior
You have to understand that this not all about sex with young females--it is about conditioning them to domination by the sect's males, so that they become his lifelong economic, social, and sexual servants. Forcing them to have sex at an early age is simply a completion (or fulfillment) of that domination. Their condition is nothing short of slavery.
As this unfolds, so will the system by which they enmesh their victims, to make them "willing" servants. his is necessary, because the 13th Amendment forbids "involuntary servitude," but it would be difficult to prosecute if it appears that the women and girls exist in this state of their own volition.
I think that there will be prosecutions coming from this, but only after a VERY thorough investigation. It is apparent that the sect deliberately defrauds the states in which they reside. (cont)
For example, social assistance programs are based upon "family size," which includes marital status. These younger "spiritual brides" are not legally married, and a woman in this condition with eight or more children gets a hefty check from the state (whether it be Utah or Texas). This money, however, is controlled by her "spiritual husband" and it is used as he directs, which is not necessarily to provide for the children, and certainly not to provide for their education. These compounds also have factories within them where the women and girls work, but they never see a paycheck--the money goes either directly to their "spiritual husbands" or to a fund controlled by the "Prophet." I suspect that investigators will also find that Social Security taxes for these workers have never been paid, either.
There are lots of ways to profit from the labor of others. All it takes is minimal bookkeeping skills--and a complete lack of scruples.
The State of Texas is certainly open to criticism, but we should keep in mind that this group only recently moved there. Far more condemnation should be directed at the State of Utah, which has shielded these monsters for fully a century, and to the States of Arizona, Idaho, and Nevada, where authorities have long tolerated the enslavement of women and girls, and where the states provide much of the funding for the group. You should also be aware that the sect operates factories within these compounds, as well as in both Colorado City, AZ and Hildale, UT. Some of these are subcontractors for significant defense industry suppliers, and the profits are enormous--particularly since they have such low labor costs.

People who have not lived around and dealt with these folks have no conception of how twisted their teachings really are......
And the global warming crowd isn't just as twisted??
how can you even compare horny old men who sleep with countless underage virgins for the purpose of knocking them up to people who are concerned about the welfare of our planet?
Both are looking for the promise land. One uses a twisted form of religion, the other uses a twisted form of science. NEITHER can be proven, both are hoping that they are right.
