Overlooked: Ghosts Towns of Minnesota

News – If there's an epicenter to the country's real-estate downturn, it may be just be Wright County in Northwest Minnesota. As outlined in the recent three-part Star-Tribune feature "From Boom to Bust," the county, located 30 miles from the Twin Cities, is facing the brunt of the subprime mortgage meltdown and overbuilding.

FTA: "They'll purchase after the units are sold back to the bank." Sad.

My home county resembles this description to a lesser extent. There are large tracts of land that were cleared for new housing except with just a couple of houses actually built but vacant. A 'luxury' condo project looks completed but has been totally vacant for over a year now surrounded by a chain link fence. Neighborhoods completed in the past couple of years have several 'for sale' signs in yards with little prospect of buyers. While home values have dropped, they haven't dropped to the extent of Wright County or even our neighboring county. Things are bad in the housing market here.
