The Pentagon's National Defense University's National Institute for Strategic Studies -- a Defense Department research center and the Pentagon's premier military educational institute -- just released another study that can be found here:

http://www.ndu.edu/inss/Occasional_Papers/OP5.pdf

"Measured in blood and treasure, the war in Iraq has achieved the status of a major war and a major debacle. Compounding all of these problems, our efforts there (in Iraq) were designed to enhance U.S. national security, but they have become, at least temporarily, an incubator for terrorism and have emboldened Iran to expand its influence throughout the Middle East.

Much of the blame for what went wrong in Iraq after the initial U.S. victory is due to Donald H. Rumsfeld. In November 2001, before the war in Afghanistan was over, President Bush asked Rumsfeld 'to begin planning in secret for potential military operations against Iraq.'"

I think McCain will be more of the same.

True. Stating that staying in Iraq for 100 years is just fine is sure playing well on the Arab Streets. Well if you are a recruiter for Osama Bin Laden.

Bush is the most miserable failure this nation has ever seen as a president.

He says 100 years because he really doesn't have a better plan that he can get his supporters to swallow. So if you don't have a real plan, the McCain's of the world say keep on course. Like being lost in a forest, he keeps plodding on oblivious to the fact that he's been going in circles.

The 100 year comment was not only a smart-azz comment showing he has little care for the lives of those who will do the dying and their families, but it really betrays his contempt for the people in the military and their families.

But don`t let McCain`s words do all the talking for him.

On top of refusing to support the new GI Bill (VFW endorsed June 2007), he has consistently voted against increasing military funding to the Veterans' Administration:

* Voted AGAINST an amendment providing $20 billion to the VA's medical facilities. [5/4/06]

* Voted AGAINST providing $430 million to the VA for outpatient care "and treatment for veterans," one of only 13 senators to do so. [4/26/06]

* Voted AGAINST increasing VA funding by $1.5 billion by closing corporate loopholes. [3/14/06]

* Voted AGAINST increasing VA funding by $1.8 billion by ending "abusive tax loopholes." [3/10/04]

* Voted AGAINST a $650 million increase in veterans' medical care funding. [8/1/01]

But the responsibility is on Bush & Cheney.

"our efforts there (in Iraq) were designed to enhance U.S. national security"

Bollocks.

Read the writings of the PNAC neocons who are the architects of this war.

1). The goal is conquest of the entire middle east. Iraq is merely the beachhead.

2). The underlying purpose is to assimilate the middle east into the "global economy," i.e., to take their natural resources, give them Walmarts and McDonalds and sweatshop jobs making Nike shoes.

And a bipartisan report from the House Armed Services Committee:

http://armedservices.house.gov/pdfs/Reports/PRT...

A key component of the U.S. strategy to rebuild Iraq and Afghanistan â;; dispatching military and diplomatic workers to direct aid at the local level â;; remains beset by troubles over funding, staffing and administrative support.

These provincial reconstruction teams often operate under unclear chains of command that can result in uncoordinated, and even counterproductive, outcomes.

Finding qualified individuals also remains a challenge, with civilian agencies unable to fill the increased number of teams in Iraq and keep them staffed.

Another issue is the lack of money dedicated to the effort. According to the report, the teams rely heavily on a military fund intended mostly for emergency payments, such as money given to locals to repair property damaged by U.S. forces or address urgent humanitarian needs.

Over half the "reconstruction" money we spend in afghanistan goes to salaries of westerners hired to "run" the country.

As one iraqi contractor wondered aloud to a US reporter shortly after the occupation (paraphrasing), `why does the US choose the most expensive contractors, the Americans, when not only can I do it much cheaper but I also have more experience. I have been rebuilding bridges and buildings non-stop since the Iran-Iraq war began nearly twenty years ago.`

One of th ebiggest problems was the use of young Republicans to oversee the reconstruction and rebuilding of Iraq. They had no experience in doing what they were asked to do (which seems to be a key component in an appointment in this Administration).

This debacle has about reduced us to third world status.

The treasury is depleted, the military is struggling and the country is rapidly sinking into depression....

Congress and the american people are still being lied to regularly about Iraq by the bush administration.

Petraeus Hid Maliki Resistance to US Troops in Basra

Politics â;; Petraeus lied to Congress about recent fighting in Basra. al Maliki attacked Basra to keep US and British troops from resuming large scale war in southern Iraq. al Maliki also wanted to emphasize that the Iraqi government wants agreement between the US and Iran and is opposed to the US using Iraq to attack Iran.

I know part of the reason Al Sadr agreed to a renewed cease fire is because Maliki promised to not allow Iraqi govt or US troops in Sadr city.

Ironic on several levels:

Giving up Sadr City had more to do with decreasing the violence than any troop surge.

The US military is taking marching orders from Maliki and yet the same people who rant about UN control over America/our military aren`t saying a thing about this.

"After favoring Saddam Hussein in his long war with Iran, the United States was shocked when the unpredictable dictator invaded Kuwait,"

The American people were shocked because the press did not report the bulding crisis. But the Administration of GHWB knew of the crisis and of the Iraqi troop buildup along the Kuwaiti border. Furthermore, the State department was sending mixed signals to the Iraqi leader. Publicly stating that we had no mutual defense treaty with Kuwait. And of course the famous interview with ambassador Galespie. Surely the despicable dictator, but valued trading partner, took the approval of sale of high speed data transmission technology the day before the invasion as a sign that the status quo of the American Aminstration looking the other way (like his known illegal use of chemical weapons agains Iran and the Kurds) was still in place.

This war in Iraq is a debacle and not short of a disaster. Shouldn't of started it, managed horribly, and with no end-game plan when the invasion was over. Incompetent, naive and ignorant of the history and culture of Iraq and it's people, the State Department and Pentagon officials, peppered with Bushites, proceeded to wreck reconstruction.

But that's history. What are we to do now? Are we ever going to win this war? And how? Now what would you do differently than what you're doing now?

I just can't see a victory in Iraq. As long as there's strong men like Muqtada al-Sadr and Sunni Bathists, who are vehemently anti-American, America can't count on a unified constitutional republic to act in our favor. We cannot dictate nor implement a government for another country. Haven't we learned from history? A structured withdrawal with a time table and provisional cooperation with the government of Iraq is one option to consider.

I think Dr. Collins gives the Bush Administration too much cover.

Bush lied. Bush cracked the whip that got the dogs of war running. Bush got us into this thing. Anything less than that acknowledgment proves Bush with mitigation of his actions.

We were "in this thing" since the days of Bush Sr. The aggression may have been managed differently during the Clinton years, but it was nonstop through all three administrations.

And it will likely be non-stop through the next administration, no matter who is in the White House.

Hey Mr. Fox, you say that the reason you invaded the hen house is because the head Rooster spread lies about the existence of a secret weapon to attack the foxes. Sounds good to us because we know you foxes would never lie to the rest of us chickens. Therefore, we categorically accept your report that there was definitely no conspiracy by the President of all the foxes to confiscate any of the golden eggs laid by the hens. And, by the way, we need a new fox to continue protection over us dumb chickens, so us chickens just can't wait until November.

How rare it is to agree with everyone here. May I salute each one of you who had the courage to say it like it is. This is indeed humbling to know so many of you have the truth within.

To each, may I say thank you all; and may our great spirit walk with each of you. You speak the truth as one. Thank you on behalf of all our brothers and sisters in harms way.

Peace, together we can make it happen.

This whole thing makes me sick. I never dreamed that I would ever see the day that we'd wind-up where we are. Worse, that it could happen so fast (I be paying closer attention). I am also unsettled by the intransigence of this govt.'s supporters, in their refusal to hold the govt. accountable for their actions. Where is the incentive for the govt. to do anything other than enrich themselves at OUR expense? Ain't none.

The Iraq invasion and occupation along with the 6 - 8 military bases the Bush Administration has built will ONLY end when he leaves office and US congress gets a Democratic majority.
