News – The Supreme Court hears arguments Tuesday (that's today)in a case that could significantly affect the legal rights of American civilians captured in Iraq.
Ante said "they are of Arab descent - so
it's okay to deny their rights and Iraqi justice will just have to be good enough?"
Ante is right. Arab americans are way down the ladder right now. They're not as american as Irish americans or Norweigen americans or british americans or scottish americans. I wonder if they are as american as Japanese americans?

All valid questions for which there is no answer.
My ideal is one nation - one people, of varying religions,
ethnicities, and cultures.......but one people!
No one is asked to check their heritage at the door -
that is what was supposed to be the beauty of the melting-
pot society - diversity and unity - as one.
The divisions that are taking place reflect a focus on
power, not heritage. It is not a respect or interest in one
group's culture - it is pandering to a voting block.
Got a BIG voting block?..........You're uber-popular.
Got a small voting block?......You are unimportant -
and per what is obvious in our policies...not worth protecting.
Laws of the marketplace, as applied to democracy do
not represent what was our pride - that the voice of
even the few would be heard.
Nothing makes my heart pump patriotism more than these
lyrics - because they are what I believed we stood for -
we need to make that present tense more than ever:
Because All Men Are Brothers
Because all men are brothers wherever men may be
One Union shall unite us forever proud and free
No tyrant shall defeat us, no nation strike us down
All men who toil shall greet us the whole wide world around.
My brothers are all others forever hand in hand
Where chimes the bell of freedom there is my native land
My brother's fears are my fears yellow white or brown
My brother's tears are my tears the whole wide world around.
Let every voice be thunder, let every heart beat strong
Until all tyrants perish our work shall not be done
Let not our memories fail us the lost year shall be found
Let slavery's chains be broken the whole wide world around.

Good point! If they acheive the decision they want from the court it could, in time, be interpreted that way - Don't you think?
Not that it hasn't happened in the past, but the concept that a tourist in trouble in a foreign country would contact their embassy - or other U.S. govt. official for assistance - and
be ignored - legally. That thought would keep me from traveling.
grid,
As usual, you're way off your coordinates. You don't know what the hell your flapping your gums about.
First, ANY news organization - foreign or domestic - working in Iraq is sanctioned by this government through a de facto cooperation between the Iraqi government and the coalition forces command. They provide visas, or its equivalent, for their work.
Secondly, ANY American citizen under these circumstances has the right of due process - it's the law for anyone, not just flag-waving idiots like yourself - something for which every fallen American soldier has fought for AND no President can take that away.
grid,
Please explain how?
This article focuses on media personnel that have gone to Iraq and have been detained, not because they work for the media, because they look Arab, are Arab, speak Arabic, and are naturally suspect even though they're American citizens. Their ability to be in Iraq is due to having gotten permission by the coalition command AND the Iraqi government. Those people are asking for the rights they have as American citizens, not any special rights you ascribe to Mexican illegals. They're not in Iraq illegally. They're there with the consent of our and Iraq's government through a visa for the purpose of doing their job in the media.
Is there anything wrong with that, or do you believe these Americans have a special secondary status from any ordinary American citizen from which you are exempt?

As highlighted in the article, this could prove to be a
very important decision regarding reporters in a war zone.
That your American citizenship, - naturalized - dual - or
just ordinary citizenship, would not guarantee you access
to our justice system - even when it's OUR war?
Because, now - more than ever - it matters whom you know?
We threw our weight around plenty when it was American
contractors - and they got their immunity. But these guys
aren't sympathetic figures - won't stir up a lot of protest
here at home.......be real - they are of Arab descent - so
it's okay to deny their rights and Iraqi justice will just have to be good enough?
