The hike in food prices is mainly due to, in my estimation, the high cost of fuel, in large part due to the diversion of crops from food to bio fuel production.
Somehow, we have been sold on biofuels as the golden egg that will solve our energy needs. Nothing cdould be further from the truth, but we continue believing in it.
Also, the specter of increased demand in India and China is also cited prominently. Bull, in capital letters. Did the inhabitants of those countries suddenly change or increase their eating habits enough to cause current astronomical increase in fuel costs? I think not.
If I were Indian or Chinese I would at this point harbor a high degree of animosity towards those that repeatedly are using those countries as scapegoats when explaining the increases in the cost of living afflicting the world.
