Millions of people had braved the threat of suicide bombings to vote in the polls that will determine the political future of President Pervez Musharraf, a key ally in the US-led war on terror, and the ruling party, the Pakistan Muslim League-Q
In a significant blow to the president, the chairman of the PML-Q appeared on the verge of losing his seat, according to early counting.
Television networks reported that Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain had lost his seat in Punjab - a traditional ruling party stronghold - to a rival from the Pakistan People's Party (PPP) of Benazir Bhutto, the assassinated opposition leader.
