News – A senior al Qaeda terrorist active in operational planning and training has been killed, a Western official said Thursday.
EE,
i understand the desire to "bring OBL to justice." but surely that would entail his capture, trial, and (after being found guilty), life in prison, or the death penalty.
in some ways this seems like the best, most honorable course.
however, i shudder to think how many would be taken hostage during the trial and subsequent incarceration, then killed when the demand for his release is not met. which, of course it never would be.
if he is executed, rather than given life in prison, we will be creating the biggest martyr in history. how many recruits would his martyrdom inspire? and how many bombs will go off in train stations, pizza parlors, schools, etc, etc all around the world on his execution day? i sometimes wonder if those reasons might not have been presented to Bush by the intelligence community, and maybe THATS why capturing him has become a non issue with the administration. then again, that wouod require Bush to actually LISTEN to his advisors.

call me barbaric, or whatever you wish, but if it was MY call, heres what i'd do.
"Mr President, we have the target in hand. awaiting your instructions, sir"
"Shoot him where he stands. do whatever you must to make fingerprint or dental ID impossible. dig a grave, remove the clothes and burn them, throw the body in, cover it with lime, fill the grave in. proceed to extraction point."
when that team arrived home, they would be debriefed. then all members would get substantial bumps in their pay grade, their choice of assignments, hefty pensions, and a warning that there will be only ONE penalty for violating the secrecy of the op.
Excellent plan, to bad no ones competent or focused enough to do it, I thought we had the best military in the world. That is exactly the way it should of been done!
i think that if the right assets were tasked with the job, it WOULD get done. would just be a question of time.
I feel that with our technology and our Military Special Forces paid for by our tax dollars this could of been done with Sadam H also instead of war.
Just sit real quite and take the SOB out quietly, nice and neat, no serious troop loss, no war, I'm just dreaming.
I'm not surprised that so little has been made of this, and I'm willing to bet that everytime a US round enters Pakistan, it has full and explicit Executive approval, and (fully deniable) coordination with the Pakistani gov.
But I think the problem in capping OBL is Pakistan.
I'm not in a position to know, this is just gut feel, but it is a strong one (like that matters ;^) ).
But I think OBL is doing us better by being alive, than he would by us killing him. I understand he does not provide much executive control, and he is no longer operational, himself.
But the best thing would be if he just died quietly of natural causes.
Unfortunately, we will have to wait until an administration change to hope for a change in strategy concerning OBL. The current admin focus is elsewhere and points to a failing in getting the job done in finding OBL and eliminating him.
Yes, it would be nice to have him off the playing field. It should be Job #1.
Seven years later and Osama's still running free. What ever happened to "Osama ******ed on the wrong Bush" ? I guess that's what happens when you take your eye off the prize.
Nice...I insult a cowardly major leauge terrorist bent on the destruction to the free world, and I get reported by some piece of dumb @$$ turd who has an ax to grind against me, and Propeller, in it's infinite anally-retentative wisdom, slaps me with a violation? On a play of words? Not outwardly saying it? But well hidden? Were the parties responsible for this act of stupidity born or crapped out I wonder?

Seven years? More like 13 years.
"guess that's what happens when you take your eye off"
Yep, I agree
True but it has been almost 7 years after 9/11. Before that he hadn't attacked American civilians on American shores.

Say what?
Bin Laden was indicted for the 93 WTC bombing
Our Embassies ARE US soil
Our ships ARE US territory
Bombing The Barracks were OUR troops are stationed is a good clue as to what the target was.
BTW Hawaii (Pearl Harbor) was not a STATE in 1941 (Statehood 1959)
You wanna bet our intelligence agencies just paid a multi million dollar bounty for the information that led to his death. Now that just came out of yours and my pockets, more devalued dollars in the hands of some Islamic radical who desired a higher life style.
What ever happened to intelligence gathering without payment to shady characters?
If you want to become rich, turn Muslim, become dirty, live on the border of Afghamistan and Pakistan and keep your eyes open. Hell, there are no CIA agents there so you will be the first to see, money galore.
"What ever happened to intelligence gathering without payment to shady characters?"
NelsonR-
ask any cop, if you want to know about, or infiltrate scum, sometimes you have to USE scum.
im sure it probably works like that in the intel biz too. if ya wanna know about bad guys, ya dont ask a boy scout.
IcCaRus, my point, go to Washington and look at the C.I.A. headquarters filled to the brim with embellished humans with suit and ties shuffling papers around daily. Hire those kind, shady characters, and stop hiring college educated nicely decked out humans. That was my point that I failed to transmit. Intelligence gathering my behind is bribery all.
Too bad all these terrorists think it's better to live in a cave, fearing the missile, when they could enjoy themselves in the UAE. Maybe the Sheik can build them their very own island out in the Indian Ocean. Come to think of it that's not a bad idea. They can run around chanting Death to America, fire their their AK's in the air and when the bullets come down bury another martyr. Yeah, that's the ticket!

"He identified the terrorist as Abu Laith al-Libbi."
"The official said al-Libbi is "not far below the importance of the top two al Qaeda leaders" -- Osama bin Laden and Ayman al -Zawahiri."
Thats odd...he wasnt even anywhere NEAR Iraq.
I wonder how long ago he & his bosses would have met this fate had we not botched the entire strategy of 'War on Terra'?
I completely agree GW.....
