News – A man who claims to have reduced his waste to nearly nothing out of concern for the environment now faces a lawsuit from San Carlos for canceling his garbage-collection service.
I can't believe this! I, too, wish this guy the best of luck. I hope something good comes of this. I think it's ridiculous to have to pay for a garbage service you don't use. Kudos to him for being environmentally conscious.
About 20 year ago, another guy was sued by PG&E--he had no power running to his house, the nearest source was a half mile away. He was totally self-sufficient through solar and wind power--however, PG&E claimed that "they were there if he wanted to use them," (never mind that he'd have to pay to run lines to his house) so therefore owed them like five years of minimum payments. They didn't fare so well on that one.

I wish him luck--most of this is covered by law around here--you get charged whether you produce garbage or not--they've been through court plenty of times about it. The bitch is, if you don't pay your bill, they stop picking it up--but you still continue getting charged even though they REFUSE SERVICE!! ...and they'll put a lien on your house. Pretty sweet set-up for the garbage companies if you ask me.
