News – An off-duty subway conductor, apparently jumped by a knife-wielding mugger and three other thugs as he walked home, pulled his own blade and killed one of the attackers after being stabbed, police said.
This is the main reason I have a concealed weapon permit and carry a gun when I was in Orlando.
Just like the Tiger attack that killed the kid and maimed the others who had sling shots on them, "My kid wouldn't do anything wrong, we want justice from the zoo"
The kid who got attacked was shooting the tiger with a slingshot? I hadn't heard that, I didn't really follow the story. I kept changing the channel so my kids wouldn't hear it and freak out the next time we went to the zoo!
They found 2 sling shots on the kids that where attacked but still alive. They are not co-operating with the authorities so you can imagine what they were up to.
If you tease an animal eventually the adrenalin will surge enough to where they have super powerful strength and what you think keeps them secure is nothing for them to get out off.
The walls of the concrete barrier was not smooth, since it was some what rough it was just enough for the Tiger to get a grip and run up it and out.
In this case I don't feel sorry for those people, they got what they deserved.
EE:
They did an autopsy on the tiger and found undigested meat from it's earlier feeding. Now most big cats after they eat are sluggish and are not prone to attack. Especially if takes quite a bit of effort. The rear claws of the tiger were also worn down and shredded showing that the cat must have made repeated efforts to get out.
Thee punks were lucky the tiger was killed before it finished the job. They owe the zoo a lot of money in my eyes. I feel sorry for the tiger in this case, not them.
Your absolutely right there cbg, I know those parents were trying real hard with the media to get sympathy and planning on a law suit. But now that the truth is coming out you don't hear a peep from them.
I only feel sorry for the tiger and the zoo, I have seen how twisted kids tease an animal and when I call them on it they run like cowards. What is it with these types of people that get off on teasing an animal and enjoying watching them being miserable.
Worthless little twerps. I watched a couple of teenagers messing with a bull one time. They were trying to play matador. I yelled at them to get the hell out of there before they got killed. They had sticks and were standing behind a water trough yelling at the bull and waving the sticks in its direction. When it charged they were scared moition less. They were fortunate the bull hit the trough and not them. That got them moving. I think they had to go home and change their underwear. LOL
Some people are truly idiots they attack humans and animals alike not knowing that what they attack has the capacity to kill them.
This is an example of "America's future" thinking that what you can do in life to other humans with no consequences you can do to wild animals in cages and they, the wild or sometimes 'domesticated' animals', will understand that they, "America's future", are only kidding and/or that their 'taunting' is a misunderstanding.
What freakin' IDIOTS.
I think that anyone that goes to the zoo needs to know that the animals are not going to get lose and kill them or their kids no mater what.. "hey sorry the tiger killed you daughter, but that kid over there ******ed it off" is not acceptable.
Of course, morons climbing fences need to be culled from the heard. The zoo does what it can, but morons fixated on dying will find a way.
First let me apologize to BB for this side tract from his post.. OK now I will continue it. :)
Of course, if you do something stupid you have no one to blame but yourself, but I have done some stupid things in my past, and luckily I lived to learn from them. I hope the same for everyone else (well not that they do stupid things, just that they live through them) . That said, again I believe that the zoo should know that there are stupid people out there and even good people can do stupid things. I believe they were negligent not to plan for that.
They found no slinghots--that's official from the SF police department. Matter of fact, they can't find any evidence of taunting the tiger at all.
However, finding no evidence doesn't mean they didn't.
You mean the blood and tennis shoe found on the Tigers side of the enclosure wasn't evidence of them taunting???
Hi EE,
don't know if you remember me, been a long time since I posted, but I think this is the first time I have to disagree with you.
The fact (if true) that there was blood and a tennis shoe on the tiger side? no one has tried to say that anyone jumped down an 11ft wall to go play with the tigers, if they did they would still have been there. So what one of the kids put blood on a tennis shoe then threw it in.. I have to go with innocent till proven guilty. It does seem like both sides have a vested interest in making people believe their side. I still believe the zoo has a responsibility to make sure their animals can not rampage through the park unfettered.
I actually think that with incidents like this, we as a society are going to revert back to the 19th century and start packing weapons to repulse recidivist's whether our means of protection are obtained legally or not. These criminals aren't giving us much of a choice.
That statement seems so wrong, so I sat here for the last 10min trying to figure out all the other solutions available to us ... then just gave up and gave you a plus
For my part, I moved to the boonies to raise my kids, my youngest is working his way through college as a karate instructor now. Unfortunately this option is not available to most people.
I don't know how else one can handle a bunch of cowardly thugs kc...is it so wrong to protect yourself? Do you want to be a victim or a statistic? I don't think so, but desperate times calls for desperate measures unfortunately.
kc...is it so wrong to protect yourself?
Oh heck no... I just hate how little progress has been made. When I moved out of NJ, I thought things were pretty bad, now when I go back to visit 25yr later I find things are worse.. so sad.
BTW I was raised in Newark learning to take care of yourself was like learning to tie your shoes
Right on BB and kctrixter . What I don't get is the guy was how old ? 28 ? 4 guys and one of 'em is 28 ? What the heck are they thinking ? Isn't this like high school stuff ? Everyone tries to tell me about how NYC is getting better , but I figure it's just that 2-3 block radius around 42nd street with all that Disney stuff going on . They [The City Govt.] has just pushed the crime further back from the tourists . Outta sight outta mind [and in this case , outta control] . Were I'm at now , everyone hunts . Everybody's got rifles and hand guns and there's no real crime to speak of . Break into someones house , get your head blown off . So the 1900's have kinda never left this area . Thanks BB for this one .
kctrixer - I'm a city guy - I drove a taxi while in college & drove everywhere in NYC - never had a prob . I was in the restaurant -bar business at one time never had a prob. Lived on the West Side , Bronx, Jamaica, never had a prob. Took the subways alone at 10 years old, never had a prob.
Moved to Long Island- within one month my house was robbed, my car vandalised & my kids threatened -
Give me the big city anytime every neighborhood is like a small town without small town crap
con't. - I have 4 sons, they all travelled alone to NYC at a young age,to see concerts, etc. never had a prob.
Out here in the suburbs look at another kid the wrong way & the next morning you find your car windows broken or tires flat. No defense to that, at least in the city if you have some street smarts you usually avoid the senseless crimes of the suburbs.
My kids were taught those smarts & now they all very successful executives at the top of their game
I tried to post this after part1
As an adult I also have never had a problem, but as a kid growing up in Newark NJ fighting was a part of life. Knowing a bad situation when you see one, was also apart of life, when I brought my wife through my old neighborhood I knew I would have never made it there now. I will still drive through where I grew up, but I know, I would be asking for trouble if I walked through it. That's why I said things are worse now, it was strictly my read on things.
ok now I read part2
I can only speak to what I know.
What the visitors see is not the same as living there, and I believe that's true of almost anywhere.
Cities are dangerous and if you don't believe that, I can only hope that you never have to tell me I was right. wish you continued good luck.
Kc - I got to admit - Newark is one nasty place almost as bad as Philly, so I can understand where you are coming from. The strange part is that Newark as a whole is one of the more affluent areas of NJ. But as far as I am concerned it is the armpit
Now see. I remember Philly as a nice place.. funny
Newark.. one of the more affluent places .. oh god I hope not.
It is hard to tell if things are really better or worse it a matter of perspective.. does it seem worse cus I'm in a better situation and looking back it looks worse or is it really. I don't know. I can say this we have not made a lot of progress in the last 25yrs no mater what the politicians tell you. my personal opinion.
BB:
Yeah, but not everybody is a black belt in ju jitsu. This man is very fortunate and very brave. I think I'm going to go back to packing again. Maybe move back to AZ. Nobody messes with people there because we are all armed and dangerous, hahahahaha.
Like I've said before I carry a razor sharp knife at all times. They are deadly.
Good story thanks.
grandpa - I used to leave my home at about 4 AM when I was in the restaurant business - I would carry my Swiss Army knife with the sharp saw blade open, I would hold the knife in place with my watchband so that blade was facing out from the palm of my hand, but couldn't be seen.
Luckily I never had to swipe anyone across the face.
But it did work for O.J.
Yeah, I'm an Arizona boy born, bred & hope to die with my bones bleached in the sun...
All the years I lived in Tucson, I'd go walking after midnight (start humming your favorite Patsy Cline song now). I'd sometimes carry nothing but usually I either packed my 9mm Ruger, any one of my nice & rusty WWI & WWII bayonets (30cm Japanese Arisaka was the shortest) or, most preferably, my numchucks. Not many street lights in the Naked Pueblo & I lived in old, downtown neighborhoods.
NEVER once had a problem with a person and pretty soon stopped packing the 9mm. What I had problems with were dogs. Figured discharging at a dog would most likely miss (think about it...small target, moving, night). The 'chucks & blades I did have to use. The blades one eve when I was walking with my daughter...3 dogs...lots of kicking and hacking before apologetic owners came out.
'chucks were safest. Blunt damage, very discouraging, fatal only by choice.
No probs EVER w/ people though
Problem w/ a pistol is, you miss, bullet still travels. Even a big dog running you down presents only about a basketball size target. Chances too severe. One miss...where does bullet go? A wall? Through the wall? Into a bedroom? A living room?
Manual defense weapons are safer in closed areas. You miss, you just miss. No collateral issues.
Also, I always wore wide open, even the blades (except 'chucks 'cause for some reason they were a no-no to carry around though they were the least dangerous and fatal...unless used right). Figured, should some other traveler with wrong intent start pacing me, 17 inches of dark iron hanging down and eye contact.
Actually, I take something back. I was assaulted once (I admit, I was tipsy) but I was unarmed. He flashed tiny blade, put to my throat. Being I had no $, the guy went away upset. Armed & visible, wouldn't have happened. W/ 'chucks, he wouldn't have gotten close. W/ pistol...too close, gun not as fast as 'chucks.

"One of the muggers, Florenza Byas, 28, of Brooklyn, was dead on arrival at Harlem Hospital with a knife wound to his chest after the 11:55 p.m. struggle, police said."
The family of the above perp on TV news, had stated to reporters that he couldn't possibly had participated in the robbery. Stating that he was on his way to being a CPA, and they want justice done...(seems to me it already has been served)
IMHO.
Don't mess with subway employees, they have seen it all and they are not about to take crap from anybody!
Nice happy ending. Too bad he didn't get all of them.
Hey you can't go around killing people from Brooklyn like that BB. j/k A punk is a punk no matter where he is from, he got what he deserved. Another area that needs attention is the gangs...they are the sewer rats of society.
Thanks BB. Good post. Seems the worker was just protecting himself, and well too.
Whoa Joe, you aren't a subway conductor are you? Just kidding.
Unfortunately for the dead man, he didn't learn that you must take responsibility for your actions. The price for this action was death.
Sounds like self defense but maybe there is a rogue gang of CPAs. I'm sure BB would have done the same thing.
They'll have to kill me before they do MY books RFE!
Maybe they were covert IRS agents freelancing.
Aren't they all?
Poetic justice - most CPAs kill you with a pen - this one tried to do it with a knife & got it back in return.
