Damn. Goodbye Sir Ed!

If, indeed, there is a Heaven, Sir Ed will climb, and ascend to it..."because it is there."

No bolder adventurer, no more compassionate and effective philanthropist has graced our planet during the past century.

We should all request that New Zealand make us another one like him.

He was a man who looked at the impossible - then conquered it!

RIP Sir Edmund!

Yes indeed JQP. And according to the autobiography of Tensing Norgay, his Sherpa companion on that epic ascent, it was Hillary who stood atop the mountain first.

All of that was quite meaningless to both. He gave great credit to his Sherpa companion. The only pictures of that summit show Norgay at the top because only Hillary knew how to operate the camera. Most modern expeditions would fail miserably using the equipment these men had at their disposal.

Just as amazing were the previous attempts up the Northern Route which destroyed several expeditions. Hillary was simply wise to use the route through the Khumbu Ice Fall and up the Southeast Ridge. Otherwise he might have been just another casualty of the mountain.

Edmond Hillary and Tenzing Norgay were quite a team.

Cheers to Sir Edmond.

The word "great" can certainly be applied to this man's life and achievements, and the people of both New Zealand and Nepal have lost a champion.

If ever a life was well lived, it was Sir Edmund Hillary's.

Sir Edmund Hillary has truly epitomized that famous quote from Julius Caesar: "Vini,Vidi,Vici!"

A great mountaineer and part of a team, it's all team work you know, and which included my fellow townsman Alf Gregory. Without your mates mountain climbing cannot be sucessful.

Your absolutely correct, no one does it alone, even people who accomplish things by themselves (without a team) have probably learned from those who have tried before and failed what path not to follow. this in no way diminishes what Hillary accomplished. The thing that I liked about Sir Ed was he just never stopped trying, he didn't make Everest on his first try, it took several tries before he made the summit. Also as far as I know he is still the only one to have stood on the summit of Everest, the south pole, and the north pole. Dang Ed not bad
