Even Fred Thompson doubts he'll be president

News – Even Fred Thompson doesn't think he will become president. Chatting off-air to a television reporter, a stunningly candid off-the-cuff quip from the Hollywood actor cemented the impression that his heart is not in the 2008 race.

I read that this morning. I'm gonna wait a few days and see what, if anything, he has to say about that comment but my first response as of right now is, that kind of did it for me.

...Way too early to count him out. This sure smells like more campaign propaganda. (and illustrates just how far a reporter will go for a non-story.)

I'm sure that Rudy and Mitt hope the premise of this story is true.

Clearly he is not trying very hard... Oh, come on be honest.

If I would be to guess, his wife wants him more to be a president than Fred himself.

Fred finally figured it out - if Colbert doesn't think he can make it maybe Fred can't either

FRED, if you doubt you will be President how on earth do you expect anyone to feel confident in you to BE President? If his heart isn't in the race, he needs to get his heart in the race or drop out, one or the other.

I get this image of Freddy & his dope dealer friend flying in the private jet listening to the sound system cranking out "One Toke Over The Line" , & Fred turning to his buddy & saying " if the pres ain't in the Screen Actor"s Guild, I don't think I want that gig"

Fred, have no fear. If the Dems give the nomination to Hillary, you'll win by the largest landslide in history! And to my knowledge, it is not illegal for Fred to maintain his Guild membership if he becomes president.

It seems to me that, if you are at 17%, it doesn't mean that you don't WANT to be President when you don't say you are going to BE the next President. I personally find it ridiculous, presumptuous and offputting when these people who are not yet elected keep announcing that they are the "next President".

I saw Fred on Meet the Press or one of the other talking head shows on Sundays and I really was quite impressed with how much sense he made and how calm and low-key he was, as well as reasonable.

He is consistently for states rights -- he doesn't favor a constitutional amendment to prohibit either gay marriage nor abortion -- simply the right of each state legislature to make their own laws and not be overuled by unelected (or even elected) judges.

Actually, Fred did say he didn't want to be president, before he got coerced to throw his hat in the ring.

avatar

And I remember Hillary saying when she was running for the Senate that she would serve out her term and wouldn't be running Pres....and your point was.....?

avatar
Reply

I find it to be funny. Maybe he does have a laid back look at the thing, Everyone can't be a backstabbing, willing to walk on anything ,and everybody, like ....oh let me think...hillary comes to mind.

Wow! Aniokly must be crushed. She was convinced he would be "the man" after all he is still so good looking and a real southern gentleman. But I suspect if my dog ran as a republican and would back her.

avatar
Reply

Gosh! You make him sound like the kinda man I would really love to share a beer with. I love his fire, that burning passion, for the office of President. That's what impresses me! (End of sarcasm.)

In any case, I doubt if Ani is really that bummed. She still has Rudy to cheer her on a cloudy Chicago day.

Is aniokly really a she...i have doubts !!!!!

avatar

I don't honestly think he wants to be president, i think he only threw his hat in the ring because of peer pressure. He waited too long. I hope it's true, he wouldn't have gotten my vote anyway!

avatar
Reply

I agree. Besides who would want Franken Berry for President anyway? Unless he's handing out free cereal of course.

avatar
Reply

I thought I'd get by without a giggle today. Then you came along with your silly cereal jokes. Now, there is diet Dr. Pepper all over my computer screen and I'm choking on cheese. He does look quite a bit like Frankenstein, doesn't he?

avatar

Sorry about that. I do hope you are alright. Yes he does look like Franken scary. Oops I mean Berry.

Certainly makes me wonder what that pretty young thing wants with is old shrivled up ass!

I'm 57 and i wouldn't have him. Money doesn't buy everything, or at least it doesn't with me!!

Maybe he has a big,,,,, heart?

Maybe he's a great kisser?

Maybe he knows how to show that woman what she needs to feel loved?

I'm cetian that young lady is gleeful that you passed on Fred so she could have a shot at him.

Maybe he is caring, supportive, interesting, and loving. I've read his op-eds, and they are thoughtful, well-written, and concise. I don't always agree with him, but he seems to be respectful of others and doesn't verbally attack them at every opportunity like a lot of ideologues. I wondered that he didn't jump in when the fire was a bit hotter, but he's given everyone the impression he doesn't like "in-your-face" politics. The major parties are so polarized right now with social conservatism vs. socialism (both of which I think could destroy the U.S.) that someone who at least is closer to center might arguably have a better chance with independents and those who have the potential to cross party lines.

What ever you think about the guy, it looks like he is a realist to some exstent. Oh well, how many people can say they ran for president of the United States.

His campaign is now officially dead with this comment.

Theres an obvious and humorous comment to be made here.

There are actually several. Give it your best shot.

Anywho, how would he be able to keep up with his daughter, uh, I mean young wife and still have the energy to run our nation?

avatar

Easy, ask Karl Rove to be his VP.

I was so excited when Fred Thompson announced he was running. He was my candidate for sure. But, he's done nothing to make me think he takes this campaign seriously, and so I'm thinking it's time for me to check out the other candidates more. I liked Brownback, but I just saw that he's not running anymore.

avatar

Its a bummer when this happens.

The good part though, brett - is that ANY candidate that succeeds GW will improve the office.

To the dismay of us who were rootin fer an early Rapture.

avatar
Reply

how could you have possibly been excited?

he has almost no discernible platform except that he plays a cool character on television.

even after announcing his candidacy he hasn't really fleshed out much besides some very generic talking points on his website.

what about this guy drives anyone to *excitement*...his red pickup?!

avatar
Reply

It's just that there was a lot of hype amongst Republicans because of the stances he was taking on certain issues in the months before his announcement. He was gonna be the guy to sweep in there and be a candidate we could support; because the primaries had been pretty drab up to that point. Unfortunately, everything seems to have seriously fizzled out almost immediately after the announcement. Oh well, just another instance of why we shouldn't always fall for hype.

But, I'm hopeful that he'll still kick his campaign into gear, and maybe change my mind again. Who knows?

OMG! A candidate who has a sense of humor about himself? Quick, shoot him. I also find that remark about him being just at the "introducing himself" stage to be ridiculous. It isn't so much that he's late -- all the others are WAY, WAY early. I mean seriously, almost a TWO YEAR campaign? That's just nucking futs. Our fine Senator from Illinois - Obama - has been MISSING from the last few floor votes. Why? We presume it's to campaign for a better job, while NOT DOING the job he's currently hired for. Ticks me off, big time.

Good point, joe.

...last few? I believe the number is like 80% since the campaign started. There's campaigning, and there's vacationing.

Personally if someone is going to run for something, they should have the balls, or ballettes as the case may be, to step down from their present, publically paid position. I may be mistaken, but I believe that is what Bob Dole did in 1996.

avatar
Reply

At least Obama might have a shot. OUR esteemed senator, Chris Dodd who is topping out at a whopping 2% has enrolled his kids in Iowa SCHOOLS, for heaven sakes. He also hasn't been doing the job he's getting paid upwards of $130K per year to do. This is the third time in 3 campaigns that CT has been left paying for absentee Senators who don't have a snowballs chance in hell to become president to try at our expense. Hell, Lieberman, the conscience of the Senate, not only took our money while he ran for VP, but HE hedged his bet by running for the Senate at the same time. Stupidly the great state of CT reelected him! That was okay with half the country -- but Fred makes a joke and it kills his campaign? Puh-leeze, guys.

WARNING! WARNING! Danger, Will Robinson. Religious nutjob wants to remove the First Amendment and put religion into government. Run away! Run away! Anyone who talks FIRST about his invisible friend and THEN about the real issues is a serious danger to our nation. (besides, 25 years in the military is really NOT a qualification for the job. Or at best, just a PART of the job. As we all know, the Commander in Chief of OUR military is a CIVILIAN, by design.)

Corporal Klinger got a promotion? {8>D)=

Educate yourself. The first amendment guarantees that congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion OR prohibiting the practice there of.

This means that Congress cannot make a LAW that respects any religion, that includes anti-Christ religions. And Congress shall make no LAW prohibiting the practice of religion, that includes the true Christian religion.

Our founding fathers who signed the U.S. Constitution, were all but a few, self proclaimed true Christians. Washington was a believer in Christ and quite open about it as were many other presidents, including Reagen.

If a person in office could not hold a strong faith-belief stance, no one could hold office. Even atheists are strong about their faith-beliefs.

The first amendment guarantees no law to be made that could stop a Christian from holding office.

"If a person in office could not hold a strong faith-belief stance, no one could hold office."

What drivel. Faith by definition is believing in something you know isn't true. Leaders who have staunch religious faith are the problem, not the solution. For example, consider Osama Bin Laden and George W. Bush.

As far as "Our founding fathers who signed the U.S. Constitution, were all but a few, self proclaimed true Christians" all I can say is you have been lied to.

I want to point out to you that you seem to have several misconceptions. However since you appear to operate on FAITH instead of KNOWLEDGE, it will probably be a waste of time.

I'll just point out the one really, really, big idea you should become familiar with: We here in the United States have a SECULAR form of government. It was done that way by the design of the founding fathers - regardless of their PERSONAL inclinations - because they KNEW, ABSOLUTELY KNEW that if religion crept into government, an internal war would eventually start. I guarantee you that is still true today. If you don't believe me, you need look no farther than the middle east or Africa. Or Ireland. Or ... well, there are PLENTY of examples. Don't be part of the end of our country. Be VERY careful who you vote for, and why. Please.
