On Monday, authorities in the Dominican Republic said they had removed 10,000 tubes of the Chinese toothpaste brands "Excel" and "Mr. Cool" from shelves after learning they contained diethylene glycol, a chemical commonly used in antifreeze and brake fluid. Panama also removed the Chinese toothpaste brands from stores last week, but said the level of diethylene glycol did not appear to be dangerous.

Pet food ingredients from China tainted with the mildly toxic chemical melamine were blamed in the deaths of dogs and cats in North America earlier this year, prompting a massive pet food recall and, eventually, an investigation in China.

Ya know, I hear about all of the nasty things that are used to make crack, and then I read this sort of thing (diethylene glycol, a chemical commonly used in antifreeze and brake fluid) and my stomach turned just a tad. Is this in ALL tooth paste or just this particular brand? My mom brushes her teeth with baking soda only and I used to think that was gross. But now, not so much.

I'm just curious what those chemical were doing near the toothpaste plant anyways. Seems like you'd keep the poisonous chemicals plant away from the 'I put this crap ion my mouth' plant.

Right ... China doesn't care, and our government doesn't care because if they did they would NOT send U.S. manufacturing overseas to get products made CHEAPLY while putting Americans out of work.

There should be spy's who check out these workers bathrooms - what kind of toothpaste are THEY using! And those people who make the dog food - what are they feeding THEIR pets? And so on and so forth. If they don't jive, then what is up with that? Know what I mean??

The Chinese government and its foreign & domestic 'semi-capitalist' partners are trying to move China into the 21st century too fast. They can build the plants and the infrastructure that is needed to fully industrialize, but the industrial work ethic and dedication to turning out a quality product doesn't just pop up overnight.

Before I get jumped on, I do NOT mean to say the the Chinese people don't have a good work ethic - from what I have heard and read, they do. But it is tied almost exclusively to the personal labor of agriculture, which is a very different working environment than that of a manufacturing plant.

The Chinese government needs to slow down a bit and let its people's social development catch up with their economic development. Perhaps then "Quality Control" will mean something more than just another box to check off in the production and shipping process.

We need to go back to what is manufactured in the US is sold in the US, etc. Yeah I know about infrastructure and trying to sell to the masses so we can make tons of profit, but what comes first? our health, or profits... oops stupid question.. we want the money before our health, of course.

Not only is this going on in "China", but in third world countries all around the world, including Mexico. We try to bring them into what ever century it is, to make them self sufficient and to breath the air of profit mongering... and what do they do... add additives that werent on the ingredient list!!

Let them sell their stuff to themselves, and we'll keep to ourselves, thank you very much. To each his own.

Start reading the labels on jars and cans at the grocery store - you will be amazed.

Del Monte jars of mandarin oranges - Product of China

Various cans of mushrooms - Product of China

I can just imagine how many of the additives are from China but companies aren't required to identify those

Big newspapers across the country are reporting that lots of shipments of food arriving at U.S. ports from China are being refused due to them being contaminated. Recently, the Washington Post reported that the USFDA seized more than 1000 shipments of tainted dietary supplements, toxic cosmetics and counterfeit medicines from China. Furthermore, according to a report published in the Chicago Tribune, mor than 130 shipments of food were rejected from China due to them being contaminated with salmonella bacteria, or for containing banned ingredients.

Having spent a couple of weeks in China, it's easy to vouch for the fact that "clean & safe" to most of us, is not what "clean & safe" means in China. I tried some of the hotel's provided toothpaste - once. Three days later, after my system returned to a semblance of normalcy, I had learned my lesson. Do not trust any Chinese product one would ingest, inhale or allow otherwise into your bloodstream. Or obviously even one's pets.

I think we should send our elected officals to work in some of the chinese factories. I hear they are having a labor shortage.

China's big problems( which we need to exploit to the max) are going to be:

the one child per family law.

the lack of a working internal transport infrastructure

polution which is already leading to huge potable water shortages.

Do the Chinese people themselves care if their lack of food and drug safety is killing them? This shouldn't be just about their export market.

                                There is no domestic market.

The glam stuff you see about consumerism in China is a PlSS in the ocean.

Their whole system is about ignoring the international rules and protocol of trade , meanwhile we're not only copping it up the back passage, now the front as well !!!

Why doesn't the US just ban any food product imports from China and other countries? Their products have proven to be anything but safe and always of poor quality. This would also lower the trade deficet and put more jobs in america and help the american farmers that are struggling to compete with tainted food from china and other importing countries. The US can't control the growing and processing of food in other countries and the FDA has proven it can't control or monitor food that is imported. Not until a few people die do they make any efforts to test or monitor imported foods, then its too late and after the fact.

The chinese people do not worry about their own consumption because the chemicals and other additives that we are finding in foodstuffs etc. are only meant for export. These are fillers. CHeaper than the actual product and therefore added for bulk, the addition of protein, and cost savings. Until China steps into the 20th century in it,s production and inspections I suggest that Chinese products be shunned. Conspiracy theorists will no doubt see a calculated effort to poison the western world. I can see why one would think that.
