        Fatah isn't great but they are less radical than Hamas. Abbas is from Fatah. The advantage of weakening Fatah when they are in a gun battle with Hamas is.....?

        I have to admit to being a bit confused for the first time...and the Saudis are now obviously in the game, financing militias as actively as anyone...hmmm

        This is about the legitimate government of Lebanon's army attacking a palestine refugee camp where it's soldiers were killed when they went there to get some bank robbers. They believe the robbers are members of fatah islam. And because it is the legitimate government of Leabon that is friendly to the U.S. and shares many of our ideals, it can buy or be given our weapons,if they ask and if we want. Moderate in this context means they will kill you with two bullets instead of three or maybe that's conservative.

And when if Fatah were to consolidate its power, Abbas would be in a position to resume talking to Israel, and, Hamas, Hezbollah's ally would be weakened...you think it is in the US interest to have Fatah loose and Hamas gain control? Maybe it is...lol...if you're going to give Israel and Lebannon a green light to overrun Palestine...

      The reason al Qaeda has spread its influence is precisely because we invaded Iraq rather than finishing the job in Afghanistan and diplomatically working the region and improving our image and relations.

      So, yes, Bush did do it and he only needed 2 legs and one dysfunctional ideology!

          You really haven't any understanding of the region or its history so let me help you out here:

          - Saddam provided us help, by default, because he did not allow al Qaeda to operate in Iraq. He persecuted anyone who opposed him and would not allow any person or group that threatened or was a potential threat to his authority.

          - We could have improved relations with Iran. They provided us aid in Desert Storm, Afghanistan, and the Bush Debacle currently under way. By default they are anti-al Qaeda.

          - We could have used improvements in Afghanstan to improve our image throughout the region thus minimizing popular support for al Qaeda especially in Pakistan.

          - Through diplomatic initiatives we could have stabilized power throughout the region thus providing stability that could have reduced popular support for any extremist group.

          But, thanks for your post. It's just more proof that those on the right are the real threat. Your absolute ignorance isn't funny any more.

        We were in Iraq before we were in Afghanistan jeffery1...long before, like over 10 years, but we never finished the job while we were there, consequently, you're now dealing with it again...thank the U.N., the wonderful organization it is, without teeth...I guess they planned on talking themselves to death.

            Interestingly enough France and Germany had contracts in Iraq. Everywhere we get into a war it seems the French are involved somehow? Maybe I can learn to do without French toast if this is the cost?

          Sorry, but you're wrong. You really need to research what Schwarzkopf, Bush, and Powell said about Iraq to understand why. Why we did not go to Baghdad had absolutely nothing to do with the UN but with our military's assessment of what would happen if we did. So, we did complete the job we set to complete in Desert Storm.

            NO, it had everything to do with our agreement with Saudi Arabia, Jordan, etc. that we would liberate Kuwait only and not take out Saddam in the process. In exchange, we were based in Saudi Arabia, which ******ed off OBL, and were allowed to fly over Jordan.

      This is not a retorical question, I do not have a clue as to why Commander-in-Chief Bush picked Iraq as the one spot to place nearly all of the troops in his war.

        It's my believe quackpot that the al-Quaeda-styled terrorists want to make Iraq their base of operations, to work out of, possibly because they can get supplies from neighboring countries sympathetic to them, get in and out easier than Afghanistan or other places, the region is in turmoil, and they can inflict their sickness of terror and intimidation, which includes blowing up women and children, causing numbing fear, so that nobody will want to stand to fight them.

        Is America the only nation with enough guts and sand to do this? Should we have stayed out of WWII so that the Nazi could have continued murdering millions of Jews? None of these are easy questions to answer, and are probably being answered by more learned men than you and I. I do know that Sadam Insane was murdering hundreds of thousands. If anyone had seen the killing fields in Cambodia, you'd ask yourself why we left, left them to be murdered?

        With Muslim terrorists in it, the world is NOT a safe place!

          Do you know what you're talking about? It seems not. Al Qaeda is merely tolerated in Iraq simply because the Iraqis insurgents can use them in attacking us. If we left then the insurgents would massacre the al Qaeda fighters.

          So, seeing that the al Qaeda style terrorists are actually Iraqis fighting us to remove us so that they can control their own country because we set up a government and constitution that left them little. Then yes, they want to use Iraq as their base of operations because it is their country.

          How did we leave Cambodia for the Cambodians to be murdered? You really need to research what Nixon and Kissenger were doing in the region to answer that.

            I hate to inform you jeffry1, that this is not what the Iraqi people on the ground are telling our troops, not the ones who want peace in their land. They know if we leave, hell will break out once again. Lately I've also heard that if we do pull out several of the Arab Nations have already stated that they will not leave the area in unrest. They will go in, killing all who do not comply with their ideology. I hope you can sleep at night with that kind of decision. It won't be the good guys with the white hats taking over but the evil ones wearing the black hats, to borrow a western phrase.

              I didn't say that there would be no trouble if we left nor did I say that we should. all I said is that al Qaeda is merely tolerated by the insurgency. They have been murdering al Qaeda fighters and sent a letter to Bin Laden to have al Qarda back off of killing Iraqis.

              The Iraqis nationalists have little use for al Qaeda in the long run and will not allow al Qaeda to operate within their borders simply because most insurgents are Sunni Baathists. They had no use for Islamists when they were in power with Saddam and will have none if they assume power again.

              It will be only through diplomatic intiatives that we can hope to achieve peace and stability simply because we messed it up first by invading Iraq and then by forcing our ideas into their government and constitution.

                  Um. You haven't a clue so discussing things such as Iran helping us during Desert Storm, our invasion of Afghanistan, and the current Bush Debacle is basically futile so I won't even bother. You should, however, start researching the region's history as written by real historians. Maybe then you'd see that U.S. and Western policies structured around access to oil and the Cold War have not served us well.

          Thanks for your well thought out reply. On some points I agree, but on others we have some differences, which is why I like reading your posts.

          I'm not so sure about your statement that al-Qaeda wants to make Iraq a base of opperations. From what I have read, the locals are not too fond of them. Indoneasia sounds like a more reasonabel guess.

          In Iraq, we are kind of a small kid batting at a very big bee hive, getting stung and turning alot of bees into MAD bees. The hive is big enough so that wiping Iraq off of the face of the earth would not affect terrorist-bee production.

            quackpot, that is if the Iraqi's are strong enough to resist them, without U.S. and international forces. Indoneasia is a hot bed, but too far away for them to strike targets like the USS Cole, our Embassies, markets in the Europen area. I personally think the al-Qaeda are simply criminals, thugs, and deserve to be hunted down like them. Put a bounty on them. Someone who is enterprising might like a nice income, perhaps Bounty Dog?

              There are only token "international" forces in Iraq. The rest of the world has said - "your gig Bush - good luck good bye".

              Given that, the Iraqis are going to have to do their own gig perty soon, and after four years it is none to soon to ask for a plan.

              I totally agree that al-Qaeda is a world-wide street gang. The question is, how to deal with such a street gang that has gained new members as a result of our perceived take over of a Middle Eastern Country

            Second of all, it might do you well to remember who your friends are. That's right, as the United States goes, so goes Canaduh. You follow and copy our political system, you follow and copy our economic system, you follow and copy our culture; now it would be wise to support us as we battle (alone, as per usual) enemies who wish to do us harm. They attacked us in New York, they could very well attack Toronto or Montreal, as well. And when they do, we'll of course come rushing (as we always do) with aid, food and money, because philanthropy is something else we've perfected.

Sure, you placed a few troops in Iraq under the auspices of "helping out the American effort", but let's face it - your military, much like the Queen and the royal family - is just for show.

              As for oil, there's plenty of our own oil in northern Alaska - if our own turncoat Eco-Libs would allow us to drill there. But in any case, us buying your oil provides a much-needed boost to your economy, so I guess we both win.

              I guess what I'm saying, Hannibull, is that I like Canada - I like maple syrup, I like moose, I like Anne Murray. What really frosts my wienie is when you sit up there on your toques and criticize our government, whom you didn't even vote for, or against, and tell us everything that we're doing wrong.             Some of us served on the front lines, defending this country, when we returned we were spit on instead of thanked, called names by those who refused to serve, mostly because they had no character.             Years ago, I remember somone saying that you didn't surrender to Sioux nor Apache. They were going to kill you if you did anyway. You might as keep your honor.               You are again speaking of conventional war, not war with fanatics who cannot be found in a local population and fanatics who do not fear death since they believe their God is with them. We have been doing it your way for 5 years now and terrorism has expanded everywhere, the only thing holding it back at all is intelligence and people who inform trying to help out. You lose the support of those informers and you are lost. I fail to understand your logic so i will ask you to explain it to me, how is the fact that America has made way more fanatics in the last 5 years helping the global war on terror? I woukld of thought that to win a war you would need your opponents to diminish each year not to expand. If you wish you could try to blame the libs but terror was increasing even before people started to wake up.

        My guess underline guess. Most of the military is not in Iraq a good portion of the troops there appear to me to be guard and some select marine, army,air and navy units. It also seems to me that many of the guard units are from the midwest, although that's more of a intuitive feeling than anything else.

      I think you misunderstand. Perhaps Daylight is saying that Hitler killed so many because, due to their compliant and peaceful nature, HE WAS ABLE TO. If they had been violent and/or warlike, 6 million of them would very likely have whipped his as* but good. A fine lesson there for those that think we should all be disarmed.

      Actually there are several places where the Arabs and the Jews are living side by side, in virtual peace, until one of the militant Muslim groups come in to stir things up. Hezballah being one of them. Sadat figured out that the Jews wanted to live in peace with them, decided to barter a peace pact, and his own Muslims assinated him...

          And you guys were doing so great without us. We should have just stayed at home. I mean, you guys already took back most of western Europe, including France, and were halfway to Berlin.             Geez Jason, did i strike a nerve friend? You being a history buff, would you like to go through a few American battles that did not go so well? Fortuneately i have a little more respect for others that fought before me so i will not question their efforts in a just fight. I see you have no qualms but i do not mind, i expect very little in the way of honor, integrity or courage from you or your supporters. You have shown time and again that you bring nothing to the table of humanity. I am sure if you did a bit more research you could find a few more battles that we lost my friend, feel free to point them out.

              Any time Sabresh*t. And yes, I could point out a few more battles in WW1 and WW2. I think the only battle you will be able to find for us is when America first went into North Africa after our entrance. We were green in battle, so it took us a fight to get back in the swing of things. You could count Operation Market Garden, but that was Monty's fault there. Otherwise, Sicily, Italy, D-Day, Battle of the Bulge, and the islands in the Pacific all went well for us. And Honor, Courage, and Integrity are all in the Army values for me. You see I am in the 1/116th Infantry in the Virginia Army National Guard, who also hit the first wave at D-Day, I might add. I've been to the sandbox and to the 'Stan. Sucked it up in both places. So, I guess you can't call me a coward like every other person on here that doesn't go with others. Don't believe me? Message me an email address and I'll send you a message from my AKO (Army account) email. Only Army members are allowed to have email there.

                I could even e-mail my DD214 (discharge from active duty) if you really want. It shows all my awards and lists combat fire pay / hazardous duty pay received in Iraq and Afghanistan. But, I'm sure you will think of something nifty to say. Truthfully, you being Canadian and all, I could care less. As far as the guys who promote us going to war in Iraq and Afghanistan and do not fight with us, I would rather have someone supporting me in my fight than sitting on a computer back home throwing around BS on a computer. That is why I tip my hat to people like MacR and saint on here who despises your bullsh*t. You think you know all about the world, but truth is, you haven't been anywhere outside of the comfort of your picked surroundings. So, what do you know about my enemies and America's enemies other than what you read on your hand picked propaganda filled websites and television? I'll go ahead and tell you - Jack Sh*t.

            Eh it was the Canadians failure. Bad luck, fog of war. Uderestimation of what was needed. Good preparation for the future upcoming invasion. It would have been a failure if the lessons had not been learned. Don't ever denigrate the Canadians as warriors. They're protecting our northern flank.

              I've got nothing but respect for our fellow Canucks. I served with them in Afghanistan and they were very professional soldiers. It's just I felt the need to display the facts of WW2 to a certain individual who felt American, particularly my grandfather's, contribution to WW2 was largely insignificant. I also know their contribution on many famous battles, including D-Day, where they served honorably beside us. I'm not trying to belittle them, just trying to belittle the all knowing Sabre here with facts.

      As a matter of fact, the Arabs occupy 99.8% of the lands in the Middle East while the Jews SHARE the remaining 0.2% with the Arabs. Now... can you tell us WHY you believe that these 0.2% Israel is SHARING with the Arabs should belong EXCLUSIVELY to the Arabs, too?

      Hint: the Palestinians as an ethnic entity NEVER owned any lands and were unknown to the world prior to 1960.

      Another hint: an average Arab in the Middle East owns TEN TIMES more land than an average Israeli.

      Daylight, look around you. From Asia through the entire Middle East and into Europe, who are the major players in all of the carnage? Israel isn't the problem and never was. It's good propoganda when irresponsible people refuse to be held responsible for their actions, but now Israel isn't firing on Lebanon and the carnage continues. Only now, no one can blame Israel. Your own people are murdering each other all over the world and you really believe that these murderous groups care about who is in the line of fire? I have yet to see one single group of these "Fundamentalists" admit that they made a mistake and took out civilians. The killing will continue as it has for the last 1400 years. YOu want to blame it on the Jews, maybe on the Americans. How about the South Africans or the Spanish. The fact is that it's a psychopathic religion with psychopathic followers.       Daylight, you are absolutely correct. Every country in the world should emulate Israel for it's survival. It should have leveled the West Bank and Gaza years ago, but didn't. Instead they tried the approach to peace by withdrawing from Gaza unilaterally and they got rockets fired on their cities in exchange. How would you like that deal?
