I used to live near Greensburg. You can be sure that the people who live there will be helping each other to get their lives back in order.

9 people die in a tornado and you guys go nuts. It's a blip on the radar screen. That many people die every hour in car wrecks, 50,000 a year. The way you are whining we should ban automobiles. Plane crashes take thousands every year. 122 just bought it in an airplane crash in Africa. Where are you whiners for that one?

Devastaing?? Hardly. The Feds will move in, pass out free money to everyone including some that weren't even there and life will go on. 9 people? Sad but hardly devastating.About the only ones directly concerned are the immediate family.

Did the homes have adjacent "Tornado Storm Cellars" on their properties? Sirens are nice. But, a storm cellar is necessary, and wont blow away as did the houses. Such a small investment for safety should be mandated by law to protect lives.

I admit, I'm not an expert on the subject, but I would guess that building a storm cellar is probably not a "small investment". I could imagine that, since a storm cellar involves digging earth, that it could be more expensive then, say, adding a floor to your house (which is also ridiculously expensive). It could be hard for people in a rural community like Greensburg, who probably don't have much disposable income, to afford it.

        Although, again, I'm just guessing.

I sincerely hope these folks get what they need to get their lives back on track.

I lived in the Greensburg area for six years. Most homes have storm shelters and most businesses as well. My parents were staying in the J-hawk motel that night and the motel staff got everyone in the shelter.

Shelters are hard work to build but not that expensive an investment. I helped dig several while I lived there and apart from some blisters and sunburn it was just time intensive.

I always sympathize with those who suffer natural disasters and loss of life. But, at the same time, those who knowingly live in regions KNOWN for natural disasters put themselves in harms way unnecessarily. Kansas is tornado country, known for that since the 1800's, it doesnt seem to be letting up, and man cannot battle mother nature & win. So best possible solution to avoid tragedies like this? move!

So we should stop helping people who live in 3rd world countries because they live in regions where growing food and having good water is difficult to come by? Why not send them U-hauls instead - tell them to get the he!! out of there? (sarcasm)

Many people disagree with Tigra on this issue, but I think the idea is valid. Tornadoes are known to strike Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas every year, sometimes with deadly consequences. People should beware living next to flood prone areas along the Mississippi River (or any large river). People living along the eastern seaboard should beware of oncoming hurricanes from June through November. Those living in the northeast US and the upper plains should be concerned about blizzards every winter.

Having wiped out a majority of our nation as a "safe place" to live, where would you suggest we move? How about this...let the entire nation...all 300 million people move to Pittsburgh, PA. Not really a doable solution.

Accept that some places are prone to disaster and be prepared when it strikes.

I have lived in Kansas for 44 years and have seen two tornadoes. Greensburg has had 25 tornadoes in and around it since 1950. Death toll zero. This storm had 205 mph winds. It wiped out a community of 1500 and killed 7 and you are worried about living in this region. Homes don't get destroyed every year because of a tornado. It's not like Florida and the Gulf Coast where hurricanes destroy 2 year old homes every other year. Talk about needing to live somewhere else.

If only a small amount of money that has been wasted in Iraq

                Or stolen by Blackwater

                and Hallibuton

could have been used to build Storm Cellars

                for these good Americans!!!!!

We need to get OUR people safe!!

My deepest sympathies go out to those

                    mamasan...

                    you are right on!

I'm sidestepping the issue a little here, but:

In Mexico, there is a man who owns Mex tel (I think that's the name.)

he is the 3rd or 4th wealthiest man in the world. Yet, when hurricane Wilma hit the area near Cozumel, he wasn't pulling out his wallet either.

In fact, he made a public statement and told everyone not to expect him to be philonthropic like william gates, etc.

imagine if he gave just 3 billion back to his country, maybe we would not be impacted by the invasion of illegals coming across our borders on a daily basis.

his assets go way beyond 10 billion by the way.

i only wish that no one goes there and takes what little these desperate people may be left with.

they have forced them out of their homes for clean up purposes.

I would not stand for that! I dont care if I pitched a tent. i am certain there is jewelry, money, etc to be obsconded!

Libstellfibs? Wow what a nice American name you use!

So who does deserve a natural disaster?

You ought to be more honest-If libs tell fibs-then what do you call the GOP promises to capture Osama bin Laden, free Iraq from terror, rebuild the Gulf Coast & New York after 09-11-01 and Katrina? Perhaps a stretch of the truth? And what about all the WMD in Iraq that has now cost over 3500 Americans their lives and left Iraq in total civil war?

                      Ok-enough.

What are you going to tell us about how we should band together as a nation united-and actually work together and help each other VS just insult each other-for which I apologize for-its just seeing stupid names like your Libsfibs one that set me off.If Americans were not so self centered lazy fools we would all work for a common good

instead of what we are doing today!

If we work together America can shine again.

Greensburg will rebuild quickly. There is more help than they can handle already. 2 years ago, we had a very small tornado where I live. Damaged the elevator, theatre, and many houses. Nothing terribly serious. MANY trees down. The next day we had neighboring townspeople here to help. We had groups of teenagers walking around town helping move tree limbs and loading debris. After we cleaned up our yard, we drove around town and stopped where the biggest pile was, helped and moved on. This is Kansas and this is where people actually care about each other. Make any comments you want about "us dumm farmers", but I wouldn't want to live anywhere else.

I am a yearbook adviser for a high school in PA. I am proposing on Monday that for every yearbook we sell between now and the end of the school year, that our yearbook club will donate $10 to disaster relief for the people of Greensburg, KS and Sweetwater, OK. In both cities, the students have lost their schools and homes. We want to help them recover. If anyone is interested, please send me a private message.

People that weren't even there collected thousands of dollars. Remember the $2000 dollar cradit cards Uncle Sam handed out?

Its not going to be another Katrina? Perhaps the folks in this area will now see President Bush firsthand as he flies over the area, drops in on his way to a fundraiser and kisses a baby, and tells everyone how moved he is that he just lost a few votes.Or maybe he will send in a few of the trailers from the Gulf Coast, after tossing out the residents there who still have no power,no phones etc over 2.5 years after Katrina, and after pledging to rebuild their homes and cities.

The facts are clear that we are facing a humanitarian crisis here from natural causes.

I do hope that President Bush does really help these folks.I guess after seeing him BS so many times to us about everything from rebuilding New York,Louisiana,Mississippi and every other area destroyed by floods,hurricanes,etc..that I have lost faith in him.

Politics aside-an F5 tornado is akin to an atom bomb in destructive capability.

As you rebuild, please add tornado shelters, large enough to use a temporary shelters.

Yes sir, an F-5 tornado is like an atomic bomb. I'd be willing to bet that the people of Nagasaki and Hiroshima would have rather have had the tornado than the Bomb given the choice. Must be a new bomb I haven't heard about that only kills nine people. What a great idea, we can bottle tornados and we can carry them in Trident submarines. Much cheaper than a hydrogen bomb.

Have you ever seen the damage done by the two very small atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki?? That was DEVASTATION. A tornado is nothing. It takes an atomic bomb to set off a hydrogen bomb. There is NO comparison.

You do know that there are foreign countries helping us fight the war, the war we started?

Do you think that if these victims were able to carry concealed weapons they could have saved themselves?
