Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad announced today that he was freeing the 15 British sailors and marines captured on March 23. He announced the pardon minutes after he gave medals of honor to the Iranian coast guards who intercepted the Britons, saying Iran will never accept trespassing of its territorial waters.

Good, this would have come to a nasty head if it had gone on too much longer... I think he realized that

I think both sides realized that. Don't forget that part about the kidnapped Iranian diplomat that was released yesterday. Another war like the current one we are in would be a disaster for the U.S. While Bush and Blair may not care about the U.S. there are millions of other people who do.

Iran has just agreed to release all of them as a "gift" to the British people.
I have to say - I think that's a lot better behaviour than Britain or the US would ever agree to... No demands, no nothing. A gift. Sure, there's behind the screens stuff - but hey, where are all those warmongers who said "Act now, or lose sailors, face and the WHOLE DAMN WAR!"? No torture, no extraordinary renditions..... need I go on?
In no way do I think that Iran is a model society, but for good manners, they've left the US far behind.

Do not be naive. From the beginning,it was a game of tit for tat,and the iranians got exactly what they were after, the rest is propaganda
"Ahmadinejad's announcement came after Iran's state media reported that an Iranian envoy would be allowed to meet five Iranians detained by U.S. forces in northern Iraq. Another Iranian diplomat, separately seized two months ago by uniformed gunmen in Iraq, was released and returned Tuesday to Tehran. "

Looks like a bit of tough talk behind the curtains and some open minded attitude on the US side regarding the 5 iranians held as well might have worked . Hopefully some tough behind the scenes diplomacy will produce good results on the nuclear weapons issue as well. Certainly no rational person prefers wars or strikes when its so much easier to analyze hypothetical situations using tough language and make clear what can take place. The problem is that this is not enough . In order for radical islam to subside its important for the west to appear fair in a large range of issues allowing that way rational people on the other side to take over governments from the hands of radical thinkers. Its important to be tough but also fair to avoid conflicts.

That still requires the understood capacity to deliver complete destruction if necessary and the will to use it.

You make the assumption that radical Islam thinks and acts rationally.
The only way radical islam subsides is from Islam itself. The moderates need to weed them out as well as educating them. They need to get rid of Madrasses that teach hatred. Prosperity, Hope and freedom is how they grow as a society. These are the realistic ways they will subside. Anything else to me isn't a solution.

Meantime ... back in the good ol' US of A, evangelical Christians pray, yearn, and howl for Christ's return, fully believing that these are the End Of Days and the Rapture is gonna come whisk 'em away any day now. (While the rest of us will be sadistically tortured for eternity).
They eagerly scour the news looking for 'Signs,' and if they aren't there, by Jove, they'll bloody well make sure they are!
Like making sure Israel becomes a nation state, rebuilding the Temple in Jerusalem! What? It was destroyed by the Romans in 70AD? No matter! We'll just build it again! What? That gold top heathen mosque is in the way? Get rid of it! Then we'll build it so we can knock it down ... and THEN Christ will return!
Yes, very rational.
It's a good thing God talks to Dubya to sort out this nonsense.
Praise Jesus, Hallelujah, and God bless you all.

That's funny! I was reminded of Neville Chamberlain after the US was struck by the Hurricane Katrina, and Jesse Jackson was busy collecting some sort of Freedom Medal in Venezuela from Mr. Chavez while ostensibly on a junket there to negotiate reduced oil prices. When he returned to the US to make an appearance in New Orleans after the disaster(where he was taken on Mr. Chavez' private plane), he was grandstanding about how successful he was in his negotiations to get cheaper gas for the poor in America. It struck me as more than a bit ironic that his negotiations for cheaper gas were on behalf of those who apparently did not have means of transportation to escape the hurricane, even if they had cheaper gas, and who needed much more help in other ways. "Cheaper gas in our time!" Rings rather hollow, don't you think!

While it appears this PARTICULAR crisis may have been abated by a face saving maneuver on the part of Mock-mood, the crisis with Iran is FAR from over. Until they fall into line with having continuous inspections of their nuclear production facility - which is OF COURSE (wink, wink) strictly for peaceful electricity generating purposes - the tensions will remain high. And the danger of falling bombs remains. I can't help but wonder, if their purpose is entirely benign in making nuclear materials, WHY NOT let the cameras be installed. What possible harm? Oh wait -- I know, Mahmoud is afraid he will be observed picking his nose.

It is obvious that the 15 Brits did violate Iranian waters and diplomacy behind the curtain led up to an apology by the UK to Iran. Sooner or later we would find out what really happened in the tense diplomatic negotiations. I had hoped Bush would stop being arrogant by admitting mistakes in his quest to continue the senseless Iraq war! How many more dead Americans and Iraqis would it take for this Republican hardline administration to wake-up & smell the roses?

OBVIOUS? What department of the Iranian government do you work in? There's nothing "obvious" about it. If, in fact, they had ACTUALLY been in Iranian water - and Iran could PROVE it - I doubt very much this would have ended quite this way. If we're lucky, those sailors will eventually tell us what REALLY happened - if they are permitted to tell the actual TRUTH. If they WERE over the line there, the British government may well keep a lid on it. And really, if their little inflatable boat HAD wandered over into Iranian water, why wouldn't Tony have immediately admitted it and apologized? There would have been nothing lost, and Iran would have gained nothing.
