On Wall Street, the Dow Jones industrial average fell 49.27 points to close at 12,110.41 as the inflation report deflated hopes that the Fed would start moving toward an interest rate cut when policy-makers meet next week.

In a separate report, output at the nation's factories, mines and utilities increased by 1 percent in February, led by a 6.7 percent surge in production of electricity and natural gas. The Fed report said this was the largest gain in utility output in 17 years and reflected colder-than-usual weather in February.

Re: Gasoline and food prices push inflation up

The culprit in this entire matter (inflation) is the tyranny of the oil companies. Practically every sector of the U.S. economy is affected by increased fuel costs.... and the American consumer is footing the bill with across-the-board price increases that are not only reflected at the gas pump but also in increased electricity bills, delivered goods, transportation, shipped food items, etc.

Every portion of the economy that has anything to do with merchandise that requires shipping is passing on the increased fuel costs to the consumer/end-user.

Food prices have gone up because the shipping and delivery of food items has dramatically increased.

The "colder than usual" weather in February explanation is ridiculous in light of winter 2007 being the warmest winter on record (global warming).

It seems that everybody in Congress who is willing to do something about this is running for President.
