Well, I got a couple of questions. If they have all this evidence, then why is a confession needed? The second problem I have is the US government. If Bush and his cronies had not lied non-stop since he was elected, I might find this more believable. The next problem I have is that he is confessing to things like killing Daniel Pearl and such. Wasn't he in Guantanamo already when Daniel Pearl was killed?

I would have told my torturer anything he wanted to hear. I'd have confessed to anything to stop the torture. Confession obtained by torture is not always reliable. And when the authorities say the confession was given voluntarily, I remain skeptical. They've lied too many times for me to believe them carte blanche.
While saying that, If he's found guilty in a fair trial - hang him.

Whatever happened the ol' Khalid Sheikh Mohammed AKA KSM. Known Islamic Extremist reporting to Al-Quada top dogs for decades. Known to be the Master mind and operational coordinator of the murder of thousands of innocent people being murdered in cold blood or maimed for life dating back to the 1990's. Men, Women, & Children, he had no reservations about killing all and any. Boy He was a great guy huh Shankari25. Unreal. There are some twisted individuals in this world we live in. Unreal

Why the heck would you make a statement like "Did he confess before or after being tortured? I guess he finally got waterboarded too much."
This man was sought by US since the 1993 World Trade Center Bombing. He was just as or more important as a target in the War on Terrorism than OBL who is the money man not field op's. This is not a so called "Neocon or NeoLib such as Maui issue. This issue crosses all parties. The US knew he was involved in Global Terrorism for decades. Now some may have a soft spot in their heart for him because the CIA got their hands on this evil man but for heavens sake this man is as evil as they come. The world should be happy he is no longer able to plan for and carry out the cold blooded murder of men, women and children. Neolibs and Democrat(ic)s get a grip on your hate of George Bush!

The poster boy for DemLibs taken when he was captured:
http://ak.imgfarm.com/images/ap/US_Terrorist_Confe
I decapitated with my blessed right hand the head of the American Jew, Daniel Pearl, in the city of Karachi, Pakistan, Mohammed is quoted as saying in a transcript released by the Pentagon. For those who would like to confirm, there are pictures of me on the Internet holding his head, he added.
In laying out his role in 31 attacks, his words drew al-Qaida closer to plots of the early 1990s than the group has previously been linked, including the 1993 World Trade Center truck bombing in which six people died.
Mohammed made clear that al-Qaida wanted to down a second trans-Atlantic aircraft during would-be shoe bomber Richard Reid's operation.
Mohammed said he tried to kill international leaders including Pope John Paul II, President Clinton and Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf.
Yup, sounds like a typical hero of the leftist DemLibs.

I agree! After all the issues with GitMo, CIA leaks and the DOJ, now they insert this "breaking story" to deceive the public into believing they have "their" man. A bright and shining "positive?" amidst the dark negatives of the current administration. NO!
I would confess to anything also if I were tortured enough, as anyone would. Pain is a great motivator!
So tell me, you gullible believers out there...Have they found Bin Laden yet? Why not? Ever noticed the Bin Laden issue faded into thin air? No accident folks.
Through all this smoke, you should be able to see the fire! They are taking down the small and insignificant to use as fodder while the friends of the White House, the bigger culprits, are roaming the Earth.

Not to mention, the timing in which this information was released. And where is Bin Laden in all this?

Unfortunately we have the right to free speech, even those we disagree with. It is interesting that rather than arguing against the position you do not agree with, you threaten with the power of the government. This is not how our democracy, actually a republic, was intended to operate. Maybe in Stalinist Russia the KGB would spy on its citizens and act against those that voiced unapproved opinions but not here, until Bush.
You right-wingers don't get it. Discuss the topic, do not promote government interference in our debates.

How do you equate the concern that the information provided by Mohammed is accurate with support for enemies? It seems that you are more concerned with finding guilt rather than ensuring that the person is truly guilty.
I live in Illinois in which a rather large unmber of falsely accused people were found guilty of crimes they were ultimately proven to have NOT committed. The question is: what good does it do to merely find someone guilty if the perpetrator is not the one found guilty?
The issue is that our system must be structured to determine actual guilt, which this tribunal may, and not to merely find guilt. I do find it a sad state of affairs that so many do not trust their own government. That is Bush's and the compliant right's fault.

Why do you find it unfortunate that the US Constitution protects free speech?
What I find unfortunate is that people who use the constitutional right to Free speech don't recognize that they are responsible for their words and there are consequences for what they say.

It's unfortunate for those that don't agree with what's being expressed. Who determines those rules for which words to use or what to discuss? I find it unfortunate that so many people consider a democracy so fragile that it can't stand an argument now and then because that is what ultimately makes it stronger. It's when you stifle debate that you weaken a democracy. Just look at the reality of totalitarian states to see that that's true.

Why is that? Are you talking about somebody being offended by what you said. That is simply the consequence and responsibility one has to take for his or her uttered words. If you are afraid you are going to offend a friend by saying something you might not say it. Some simply believe that and are offended or even pis sed-off by the words some political leaders and individuals in the US are using seems to be giving aid and comfort to the enemy of the US. The enemy is not dumb. It seems to me that the enemy is able to manipulate the media much better than US officials. Show death and destruction to the US population and the result will be unpopularity and politicians scrambling around to adhere to the (perceived) mindset being created by the constant negative images. There is vested interest in these words and opinions. If Iraq turns out well and is able to flourish under a new paradigm how will the detractors be portrayed in a historical context? Arthur Nevil Chamberlian anybody?

GoldStandard,
It's not that anybody HOPES that the confession is false, but the problem with torture is that the confession may be true or it may be false. Nobody can tell. After a string of lies, it's hard to believe anything, and its even harder to believe what someone admits after being tortured.

The BBC's security correspondent Gordon Corera says there is nothing new in Mohammed's admission and that there is a transcript of his interrogation over 9/11 available on the web.
Its significance lies in the fact that he made the statements at the hearing, which could now lead to a trial before a military tribunal, our correspondent says.

However, I want to see the trial in open court. The reason is I want Americans and the rest of the world to know that we are still America. I think we are stronger and have moral authority when we are true to our expressed values. Does this make any sense to you?

I heartily agree splitrch! Hang him from the nearest tree if he is guilty. But first find him guilty with a public trial!
Secret tribunals, torture, no habeas corpus, indefinate incarcerations, etc. etc. These are things that were utilized by history's worst government leaders. Hitler, Stalin, Idi Amin, Saddam Hussien and a number of others would approve of the way Bush's government is handling this.
Being an American that has fought for this country, I am appalled, shocked, and getting very angry at our present government.

The problem of many on this board is their lack of perspective, i.e. historical appreciation. They are speaking from emotion.
Is all his confession true? We don't know, but to discount everything he said is stupidity.
Just a quick example:
The fact that Daniel Pearl was killed looking for him speaks volume about how much the media already know what this guy is made of.
So, those who choose to shut their eyes speak of their ignorance.

Does it really matter? Khalid Shaik Mohammed is only a small piece of a much bigger picture. This picture leads all the way back to intelligences services in Pakistan and evetually America. Phone records show Pakistani Intelligence Director Mahmood Ahmed had $100,000 wired to lead hijacker Mohammed Atta in April 2001. Was KSM part of the planning for this? Quite possibly.

If that were true, why would the EVER waterboard? Truth serums to get people talking, but there is no telling whether what they say is reality of pure fantasy. It's almost like listening to somebody else's dreams and trying to make sense of it.
The facts are that A: Torture doesn't work to get at the truth and B: Drugs don't work to get at the truth. The legal system we've been perfecting ever since the Magna Carta, flawed as it may be, works best at getting to the truth. And even that fails all too often. But it is so far better than the methods of Torquemada that it boggles the mind that Bush is resorting torture to build his "I'm a war president" ego trip.

And the secret CIA prisons. The movement of prisoners to countries that outsource the torture for us. Even though it is an established fact and there are warrants in Europe for the arrest of CIA agents for having done it, that's all fantasy too. Am I gullible? Perhaps, or maybe you are an ideologue whose attitude is, "My mind is already made up, don't confuse me with the facts."
Please understand that I'm NOT saying that this Khalid Sheikh Mohammed fellow is as innocent as a dove. No question he's a bad operator and probably deserves everything that's coming to him. Problem is when you torture people to get confessions, you can just as easily condemn the innocents as the guilty.

Like Harry Truman said, the buck stops here. In Osama bin Laden's case, he freely admitted al Quaed did it, so he is the guilty party, even if he delegated the planning.
In Bush's case, he's guilty of ordering torture and violations of the Geneva Conventions even if he didn't carry out the orders he gave.
