  It's interesting that the most vocal conservatives on Netscape haven't wanted to have this discussion. Tey have been studiously ignoring stroy after story on this very contentious topic, a bit of "whisting past the graveyard".

  I'd like to hear what people have to say about this, and whether we'll see any apologists come out of the woodwork.

    At the very least, I'd like to think that a majority who didn't pay attention to all of the signs in the past would learn from this. Maybe they'll ask themselves what others saw that they missed. We can't afford any repeats like this administration, and people are obliged to take more responsibility for their choices in the future.

      Jordan, you're absolutely right.

      What we're seeing here is ego; people do not like to admit that they are wrong, and that they were somehow duped. Denial is just another weapon to use in their arsenal of rationalizations.

      When it is more important to preserve the appearance of being right than it is to adjust appropriately after realizing you were wrong, it becomes strictly about ego.

    In the end, the question of war with Iraq oriented around two things: the WMD that the UN could not account for, and the depth of ties between Saddam's regime and Al Queda.

    The WMD issue as presented by the Bush Administration was mostly just a parroting of the UN inspectors claims, but while the UN had to maintain ambivalence, the US Govt had to say, look, we can't just sit around and wait forever for this matter to be resolved, and he's hidden WMD in the future, so either prove there's no WMD, or the US will make sure.

    The issue of regime ties to Al Queda was left almost completely open to speculation by all of the intelligence agencies.

      The AP article ignored or missed the fact that the claimed reason that the Office of Special Plans was formed-according to the Bush Admin-was because the CIA and even Defense Intelligence Agency were not providing any detailed analysis reports on the question of regime/AQ ties. This is confirmed in that same 2004 Senate Intelligence Committee report in the section on the Office of Special Plans and throughout the report in which there are repeated shortcomings in the CIA's Iraqi Support for Terrorism reports (pamphlets). So the Office of Special Plans was formed to see if the intel agencies were overlooking anything as they had in the prelude to the 911 attacks. The Senate Intelligence Committee did the exact same thing in their phase II report where NO ONE was presenting any investigation or reports on the question.

        The only post-invasion investigation into the question of regime ties to Al Queda was in the "Iraqi Perspectives Project report," and that report-again, the ONLY one that looked into the matter post after the invasion-found that there was indeed a relationship, that Iraq was supporting, training, and sending out terrorists (including Al Queda), and that the "Blessed July" operation was to have been waged with terrorists trained, funded, equipped, and otherwise supported by the regime, Al Queda, and Al Queda affiliates.

The reason the SAP was formed was the lack of human intelligence in Iraq and the former exiles couldn't be trusted by the CIA (their lies had already been proven as just that by the CIA). So Fieth's group spearheaded by our ol' buddy Wolfowitz used the same guys, Chalabi, Al Libbi and others, as their intel sources which if their intel would have gove back to the CIA would have been debunked as false again. Tenet had to get that medal of freedom for something! Please stop taking right wing talk radio and TV (FOX Faux Facts) as gospel - read Ricks' book, FIASCO, which validates my comments and more!

          Also, Cheney visted the CIA more than any other VP and wasn't getting the answers he wanted - a FACT!

              Wrong. The UN inspectors repeated again and again that there was no physical evidence that Iraq possessed an active WMD program. The Bush Administration, however, persisted in claiming there was physical evidence that Iraq had purchased fissable material from Niger (proven by Joe Wilson) and that discovered aluminum tubes were intended to be used in Iraq's nuclear reactor (also proven false. the aluminum tubes were to be used as bodies for conventional missile systems that Iraq was allowed to possess).

              And of course, the logical solution would be to send intelligence officers, spies, and UN inspectors into Iraq to find physical evidence of an active WMD program. Is it more logical to deny UN inspectors and spies more time to finish a comprehensive inspection and report of Iraq's facilities; and bomb Iraq in the hopes that our "hunch" was right and that the intelligence community is wrong?

              Your article suggests that there was a conspiracy among all the governmental intelligence agencies to thwart the Bush Administration. Nothing could be further from the truth.

              First, the whole idea of a conspiracy against the White House by an intelligence agency that has sworn to protect America is ridiculous--particularly in the wave of patriotism following 9/11.

              Secondly, the intelligence agencies must answer to Bush, as he is the CIC; if Bush had requested a comprehensive report from the intelligence agencies, they would have given him one--Bush just didn't like the answers these intelligence agencies had.

              Really? Then, point to me the specific page number in the 2004 Senate report that specifically mentions the Office of Special Plans by name.

              You haven't read the 'Iraqi Perspectives Project' report, have you? That report NOT establish conclusively that there were operational ties between Saddam and Osama. In fact, that report had NOTHING to do with investigating alleged operational ties between Saddam and Osama. The report was a study of the unexpected collapse of Iraq's military at the onset of the invasion.

              But don't believe me. Here, read the report for yourself. Give me the page numbers that prove there were operational ties between Saddam and Osama, if you can.

        I put up this op ed because the legitimate news stories that related to this (some very clearly posted here on Netscape) were being clearly ignored by those apologists who are most vehemently supportive of the Administration,and I wanted to engender some reaction to it.

    Blah Blah Blah, if this story where completely true, then how could there be a link between Al Qaeda, and the Baathist party, which in large part is called the "insurgents", people who gained power under Saddam. People all over the mid east have started terror networks, and most of them helped by our CIA, who keep popping up every where in the background. It's a propaganda game with these folks, not everyone is included, but enough people are in charge to make it work. This article proves it.

    Let's get rid of the CIA and integrate the honest ones into Homeland Security, and try the dishonest ones and their "Executives" for treasons against our country. The secrets they are responsible for have devastated the people and left us broke, very divided and chaotic, on purpose! If congress doesn't show the power of the people in our constitution to put our leader in his rightful place of serving the people by force, then we will attack Iran.

Donald Rumsfeld is the owner of International defence & engineering contractors Haliburton. Oh, and guess who got all the contracts for the Iraq war? Haliburton. And which company was it that got 90% of the rebuilding contracts for the post-war iraq? You'll never guess! Haliburton. This man made executive government decisions for the clear purpose of lining his own pockets, with government money. Just how corrupt does a government have to be before America stands up and says "Enough is enough. Geroge Bush: Get off my damn lawn."

  I haven't seen any apologists come out of the woodwork yet. I wouldn't hold your breath. Cheney and Rumsefeld who ordered these bogus intelligence reports on the connection between Saddam Hussein and Osama bin Laden are high level crooks and scammers.

  I remember how often I used to hear conservatives defend Cheney and especially Rumsfeld. Now where are they? Either Rumsfeld / Cheney supporters agree with their devious deeds and also lack character, or they lack the humility to admit when they are wrong. We may never find out, deathray.

    According to Clark's book, the President the day after 911 asked for links to Sadam. The CIA couldn't give them, so Wolfowitz had his buddy Fieth (both NEOCONS who should be in jail) get up the SAP to feed bogus intel, but intel that Cheney, Dubya & Condi wanted. Colin Powell's brief before the UN with the same BS, he now admits was the worse day of his life for what he now knows were lies.

      I can not look bad upon any countryman who does what his supreme command tells him he must do for his country. I can not also look upon his commanders with respect, because their job ultimately, is to defend the people of this country who cannot defend themselves.

      Does it really matter at this point? We already know he lied, then we went and found all the weapons we gave him, then we found out there were no ties, then we SEE Al Qaeda funding insurgents, then there's the CIA in the background of all of it mixing it up, how the hell does anyone know what to believe any more. The media has been manipulated, the truths have been turned around and fed back to us, this corruption will go down in history as our nations worst time. How about we just arrest whole parts of the government? Because that's what it would reasonably amount to.

    Many of the conservatives on Netscape have better spelling than that, and almost all of them have better typing skills than I do.

    What many of them DO lack is good judgment. Defending the indefensible is a matter of ideology, not principle, and the inability to see manipulation makes one blind, and not loyal.

    Ney the Science Guy said on one of the news shows that the 10 feet of snow in upper NY state was also caused by Ms. Smith's untimely death. I guess it was a spit ball throw to those who are sill in denial about global warming. Saw a House committee hearing on the global change report. Not more than 3 Republic members still in the true believer camp left on that committee.

    Also saw some Senate committees in action this past week on Iraq and prewar intelligence. Still many apologists in the Republic rank there. I guess we will really have to work hard to get after the 21 Senators who are vulnurable among the Republic party there. We seem to be on top of our game in Virginia with Sen. Warner taking a lead on the resolution but not allowing it to come forward by every Republic party Senator? I guess the president had their attention from a few hours before with his pleas for their loyalty. How about the loyalty they owe to their constituents? Let's remind them, please!

  Traitorous scumbags. Unbelievable. I finally got a chance to read the whole article and what Cheney, Wolfewitz and Rumsfeld have done, with the assistance of Feith is quite simply treason against the sovereign people.

  Impeach Cheney right now and sentence him to the fullest extent of the law. I think in cases of high treason (which this is) the maximum penalty is death.

  Treason is clearly defined in Article 3, Section 3 of the Constitution.

  "Section 3. Treason against the United States, shall consist only in levying war against them, or in adhering to their enemies, giving them aid and comfort. No person shall be convicted of treason unless on the testimony of two witnesses to the same overt act, or on confession in open court."

  If lying to get the US into a war with another country is not 'adhering to their enemies' then I don't know what is. Ah, dang it. I'm not sure about it. But, it feels good to say it.

Virtually no competent diplomatic efforts at all by the BUsh administration and yesterday we learned that Condi needs 6 months to train up her state department personnel for the diplomatic part of Dubya's ongoing surge in Iraq - the incompetence continues..... Military guys, you continue to do all that engineering, legal support, political contact team work in the field, and monitoring of the Iraqi ministries as they spend our money as best you can ... as usual. All Dubya's administration can do is condemn Iraq's neighbors from afar while our soldiers die, and die doing state department work too. Hard to get even young, untrained, republicans over there...

    Your electorate was polarized in order for your current government to get and hold power, divide and conquer so to speak. This fracturing in your populace is the end result of these election tactics. Frankly, i am a little disturbed that you would not have been able to see this for yourself.

    I would like to leave you with 1 thought. America has gone to all this effort because of 911, what makes you think that Iran would not be willing to go to the same lengths to defend their country. They may not have the capabilities of a super power but that does not mean they will just roll over and take it.

    According th the US Army EOD people, what the average US citizen has under thier sink is deadlier than anything they have found in Iraq. Those shells had degraded,and were almost no serious threat. NOTICE: My Karma has just run over your Dogma.

  We may have a better chance waiting for an apology from the flat earthers on global warming. The man-made cause to climate changes is not just burning fossil fuels, it is the methane gas from bull shiit artists -- of which we have an abundance. They usually sink these stories and then arrive to spam the thread when most of us have finished commenting.

  Arrest him, try him for war crimes, and hang in the same gallows as Saddam. Birds of feather should die together. This was a war of choice. That has been said over and over again. That's like saying I think someone is going to rob my house, so after I have decided who it will be based on my own creative thinking, I go over and kill person because I consider that person a "gathering threat".   I have read some real ignorant threads in this post. How can, anyone person, Bkumm and Suzie-Q included believe what they are saying. Ignorance is Bliss though.

  The Democrats have the floor but they are failing to utilize any and all means to challenge the Ultra conservative agenda. Investigations are in order within the various house agendas, but want to bet, the Democrats will fail to utilize this power to bring forth the lies and corruption emanated from King George and war mongerer Cheney, both never went to wars, COWARDS who sacrifice other Americans lives.

  When will the average American realize that both the Democrats and Republican representatives do not represent the people but the lobbyist and donators for their continuing longevity in power.

  Personally, I am voting for O'Bama in the next election. Hell, I do not want Clinton or the McCain has been, change will be refreshing. He certainly cannot do any worse than this professional politicians now in power.

    Bremer was so full of himself that he only wanted Chalabi to put an Iraqi face on Bremer's rule. A good read about this is "State of Denial" by Bob Woodward. It's the third book about the inner workings of the neocon war machine.
