The USNS Mary Sears, which has been helping hunt for the missing Boeing 737, detected a distinctive signal from the boxes on the ocean floor. The Adam Air flight, which went missing halfway through its flight from Java to Sulawesi, had 102 people on board."

From the article:
"We do not have the technology to retrieve the black boxes," Setio Rahardjo, chairman of the National Commission on Transport Safety told AFP news agency. "Assuming we have the funds, then we have to ask for a country who has sophisticated technology, such as the US," he added.
Hopefully someone steps up and retrieves them, otherwise the entire process of finding them is made pointless.

Good point. The ocean is at its deepest in that part of the world. 6 miles off the Philipines. (The "Mindinao {sp?}Deep")
Hopefully someone with the tools will bring these items up, though if multiple miles deep it may take awhile. Ahh technology. Within living memory these things were not done. The Titanic and other ship and plane wrecks had been virtualy ignored until the 1980s.
